I know this is a very random thread...but I know some of you guys must play Poker and be very into it. I am looking at purchasing a new set of chips..a decent sized set and clay of course. I prefer 14g but would love to see what you serious players suggest. Thanks ahead of time!

I am looking at purchasing a new set of chips..

Does anyone out there sell neat vintage or antique chips?

That might be even cooler than new, (assuming they aren't super-delicate) - a throwback to either the real gangster era, or Mississippi riverboat gamblers, depending on how far back you go. Might help create an interesting mood.

Now you're talking about my other vice. I own two sets of chips. One is a Paulson tourney set from a never opened casino. The other is a Paulson cash set from a casino that was destroyed by hurricane Katrina. Paulson chips have the top hat and cane around the chips and are used by a lot of casinos. Go to www.chiptalk.net for all things poker chips. The guys are nice and very helpful, but one thing, don't mention that you are looking for 14g chips. It's kind of coming here and talking about the sweet bike that you saw at Walmart and should I get it, lol. Have fun and get ready to spend some money. After you buy some nice chips you always get invited to all the games, oh BTW can you bring your chips also, lol. Any more questions let me know.

+1 on chip talk. Great resource for all things poker and pretty cool peeps.

They've got great write ups for folks looking to get chip sets that should give you enough info to start. Enough for you to get some knowledge but where you're kinda level 1/2 confused and excited..if you know what I mean. Active classifieds area too.

My favorite site was holdempokerchips.com. I really wanted a set of the Egyptians or the samurai set. But I'm not as fancy or as serious as mutt so I just got a set of nexgens. Good quality for the $ but no where as fancy as mutt's. :-)

Have fun!

Nexgens are nice very playable chips. A lot guys start out with nexgens as the poker chip bug takes hold, lol, they are a lot nicer then the "14gm" chips you see around.
As kind of typical with me I tend to go a little overboard with some things, bikes, poker chips, you get the idea. My first set was a 740 chip tourney set of Paulsons from a river boat casino in NYC that never opened but they did have the chips made. The name of the casino was "President Casino New Yorker".
Here is a pic.

My other playable set is a 1000 chip cash set of Paulsons from the Grand Casino in Gulfport, MS. that was wiped out by hurricane Katrina. Nothing was left of the hotel/casino but a concrete slab. The .25 chips are from a club in California that had gambling in the back.
Pics of the Grand Casino chips.

When you have nice chips it makes the game so much more enjoyable to play, and people hosting games will ask to come and play also, with a oh can you bring your chips too, added in. One thing I will say is, I don't care who's house we are playing at, I will say to anyone who does it, "Don't splash the pot with my chips"! LOL! My chips, my rule, lol!
One last thing before you buy ask them to send you some sample chips. That way you can get the feel for them before you drop money on them then decide that you don't like them. Have fun looking and let us know what you get.

I think I now realize how non-cyclists must feel when they overhear cyclists talk about the difference between different tires.

I cannot, for the life of me, imagine why or how I would have a different poker playing experience with different poker chips.

Note, I am not doubting you guys. To the contrary, I am hoping to stay in blissful ignorance. Otherwise, I'll be accumulating stuff for a different hobby.

OK, so damn all you guys for even getting me thinking about this.

Yeah.. I was going to say the same thing. Get yourself some of the samples. There's nothing like feeling and seeing the product beforehand. Plus it's fun.

I have a sample of the egyptian plaques.. totally cool. Hmm... I should get some samples of the Samurai too.. Just to have.

Anyway.. I know you wanted clay but just happened to find this deal.

Cool sets Mutt. How'd you score the set for the casino that didn't open?

Oh.. and if that isn't enough to get ya going.. If memory serves and I bet Mutt can correct me, there are sites that will do custom graphics for you but I think they'd be on the Nexgens and not fancy clay.

I was totally looking into that for awhile too. Wow.. you could have pix of your Ottrot on your chips.. or all your diff bikes for each $. LOL.

Like I said.. have fun!

You are exactly right. It's just like the bike thing. Let me put it to you this way. It's like comparing Walmart $6.99 tires to $65 tires. Will the Walmart tires work? Sure, but they sure don't ride the same.

LOL, yeah I was playing around with getting custom chips with ASM, they are a competitor with Paulson but unlike Paulson they will do custom designs. I even put my order in with them but canceled it a week later after the cost of them started sinking in.
Here's the mock up of what I was going to do.

Man that set you have looks nice..I love the colors of them. What's the best site to look for a set? I said 14g because I don't want to spend $1500 on a set :)

Thanks. Your first stop should be www.Chiptalk.net Look around on the forum there ask some questions and look at the for sale section. You can spend as much or little on chips as you like in their for sale section. Also you can find sets on Ebay. Just be careful poker chips can turn into an illness. It happened to me, lol.

That's ridiculous. After all, you can only use one set at a time... ;)
