Last weekend my son and I heard there were some whales feeding at our local beach, Avila Beach so we headed down with a kayak and had an amazing time. When we got there there only seemed to be one feeding. The whale would come up for air every minute or so and make a large loop and then after 5 to 7 minutes of doing that would suddenly and quite randomly shoot up to or so feet vertically in the air and swallow a bunch of fish.

The water was teaming with wildlife. There were about a thousand brown pelicans (I didn't count them exactly so maybe there was a million), hundreds of sea lions, dozens of porpoises a few dolphin in the small area. The only short warning you received was a sudden interest from the Pelicans. They would dive bomb a "a bait ball" from about 40 feet up in what can only be described as World War II London-like complete with sounds and impact on the water. We never got hit by them by them came within feet of the kayak and soak us.

The sea lions were playful and the porpoises also having fun. The whale never hit our kayak but a gentleman near us was thrown off his as the whale went vertical. It was truly a great experience and best of all I got to share it with my son.

Here are a few photos. I was too slow fumbling the camera to get a close one - half scared and half in awe.

This is a photo when we got buzzed out of nowhere.

Truely a special experience. The last really wild place.

Next time this happens, I'd be incredibly grateful if you'd shoot me a PM. My older boy is a whale fanatic and wants nothing more than to see one up close and personal. I, on the other hand, prefer to avoid mammals that outweigh me by many orders of magnitude (except DRZRM, who's a pretty nice guy).

Great pictures!

I had a similar encounter with dolphins surfing in Long Beach Island last September. I was in the water by six with no one else around and I looked north up the beach and saw a bunch of dolphins jumping in and out of the waves about 200 yards away but headed in my direction. Within a few minutes they were all around me just jumping in and out of the breakers. They continued on south having a great time. It was one of the greatest surf sessions I ever had even thought he waves were barely waist high. No pictures and nobody else around to see the show besides myself.

Perfect!

Ok I am definetly adding SLO to my possible list of retirement locations. I love reading of your adventures in that area.

Wow, that looks truly amazing! I do think it would have been scary though because I would worry that the whale would come up from below and knock me over. But wow, what an incredible experience to be around all those animals, especially the whale. Nice work in sharing it with your son and taking such neat photos too!

No, that wasn't us it it is the same beach. I think the commentary on the video made it sound like it was extremely dangerous. It sure didn't feel that way out there. Then again, I ride my bike on the road with college kids driving all around me. Now that is dangerous!

That's very cool, and I am glad that no one was injured. The power and unpredictability of the creatures, coupled with the dangers of water, is nothing to take lightly.
