Does anyone have experience with Velo Orange rims? I need to have a new set of wheels built up for my fixed-gear commuter, used with 700x32C tires. I'm considering Velo Orange Diagonale or RAID rims. They look really nice and shiny in the photos, appropriate for my vintage Fuji, but how do they build up?

I'm also considering Velocity Dyads and Mavic A719s.

Built a set of wheels fro a friend with those steel rims, are darn heavy to start with, well makes sense because are made of steel.

Did not have problems at all with the rims. You will add a lot of bling bling with those rims.

They are definitely aluminum wheels. I know some people who built them up and they had problems with roundness out of the box. They are a bit soft so it is a bit harder to bring to tension while keeping trueness and roundess together.

Steel rims? What specifically are you referring to? I don't think VeloOrange sells any steel rims...

Im not sure about the model but definitely were velo orange rims and to me felt like steel rims and really polished to chrome or chromed...

Looking at the website says aluminum alloy? so yes you guys are right, eventhought it felt more like steel rims to me due to the super shiny finishing.

I had an LBS build up a set of fixed wheels using the 32h VO PBP rim and Formula hubs. They are definitely alloy and polished VERY nicely. Not too heavy, but not really light either. They appear well constructed, not quite as nice as a good Mavic rim, but pretty good overall. I've had mine less than a year so no idea about durability. But they sure are purdy.

Far cheaper, and looks like about the same thing. Am I missing something?

I have a set of 650B Diagonals, and they are a good set of basic/touring wheels. It kinda stinks that you have to buy the Campy cassette carrier if you're not using a Shimano drive train.

I'm sure the H Plus Son and Sun CR-18 are fine rims, but I prefer not to buy products made in China (when there's an alternative).

Grand Bois?At $98 per rim, rather more expensive than I'd like.

I am with you on that, do you know where the VO rims are made?

Thanks.

How the hell do I make that many typos in one short post?

I also have a set of 650B Diagonales. They seem sturdy and heavy, but I suppose some of that weight that I feel on the road is the fat 650B tire that weighs ~350 grams. In any case, mine came laced to 105 hubs straight from VO. After ~1000 miles, the rear spokes were loose and the needed retensionng. The next thousand miles have been fine.

I also had a set of their 650B Diagonales/105s wheels. They were fine for me, though I eventually scratched them up a bit. They help up fine and left on my Kogswell when I sold it. I'd get another pair.

On the other hand, in 700C, you can't go wrong with the Dyad and for a good rim on a budget, look no further than a polished CR18.

I've had a set of their PBP polished rims with 105 hubs on a VO Randonneur bike for about 2 years now. The polish is a bit stained in places but the wheels have been true and I haven't had any problem with loose spokes. Considering the whole wheel set with skewers was $205 I consider these a good deal! Website doesn't show this same wheelset for sale anymore; it must have been a special at the time.
