I remember first seeing his name when he was a member of the Italian team that blew away the competition in the 100-km team time trial in the 1984 L.A. Olympics.

Happy Birthday Eros!

I was recently looking through my 'cycling' folder and came across this one of him....

I was wondering how the cap was kept on the bars ('cause I'd like to hang mine) until i saw the third picture. cycling visor, eh?

I got into cycling after this era thus I don't know who he is but I love the jerseys and bikes from then!

Eros has had a busy few months with his cycling tours and his work for Pinarello during the Giro and TDF.

The thumbnail on his career: 1984 Olympic Gold Medalist in Team Time Trial, Cippolini's original lead out man, and the coolest thing: winner of 1994 Mount Ventoux stage at the TDF after a day long solo breakaway.

The red Pinarello you see in the photos was actually built for him by Dario Pegoretti on behalf of Pinarello. Pegoretti also did the frames for Cippolini and Indurain.

The cycling visor is actually a regular cycling cap that Eros cut the top part out of. I think there is a specific french term for this but the word escapes me at the moment.

My friends and I have been fortunate to get to know Eros during various trips with him in Italy and when he has been out here in California at different cycling camps. A humble, generous and all around great guy.

Huh, look at that -- I always thought that the cut cap was pioneered by Andrea Tafi, but looks like Eros did it first.

I think I have said before that my favourite Tour stage was when Eros Poli stayed away over Mont Ventoux in (I think) the 1994 Tour to win. Still love it-and I 've got it on VHS tape somewhere.

I think that he was riding that red Pinarello that day, was he not?

Buzz, I didn't know that about Dario building that bike- that's great to know as I have a Duende (which is just a brilliant bike).

Do you know if that red bike (a Pegorello? a Pinoretti?) was lugged or tigged?

Oh, and Happy Birthday to Eros!

Ha, thanks for the great info. I for sure could not pull off that visor look.
