who makes a nice silver stem these days, i know if the ritchey classic line, and the velo orange stuff. in my experience, the components branded by VO are fairly low quality, so i'd like to avoid them; who else is making a nice off the shelf silver stem?
Nitto;

I don't have one of these (the top one for $22), but I have its identical match in black with a silver face plate and it is very nicely executed. 17 degree only, but light and attractive.

I agree, generally, with the VO comment...but...the stems are decent. They are just rebranded Taiwanese like everything else, they can be had as Civia, Dimension, etc. from QBP dealers.
Also, you can always strip and polish any alloy stem brand/model that you like...I did this with a Ritchey WCS for my Chesini.

Another vote for the Thomson silver stems. I just got my first one. Really nice workmanship with very subtle logos.

Uber silver would be a RaceFace Deus. They come in 31.8 and it's a mirror-like finish. Light too.

a Thomson X2...

I love my thomson x2 (i use the black one) only caution is that only have a +/-10 or +/-17 deg with the x2. Very solid stem.

I love my VO stem. Doesn't flex perceptibly, looks nice, and at 140 grams there are carbon stems that are heavier.

Deda quad in polished alloy. I polished the logo off of mine with Mother's, looks great, works great.

I have both a Nitto and Thomson silver stem. Both are fine, but I prefer the look of the Nitto.

+1, this is like the "best deal" in silver stems - lots of reaches, angles, relatively light and very reasonably priced! What's not to like?!
Btw, don't know if this is true, but I heard that some Thomson stems do not work well with carbon steerers. You may want to research that if you're interested in a Thomson. Good Luck!

One thing about this builder's stem is it doesn't appear to come with a 4-bolt removable face plates. That's a non-starter for me, but if it doesn't bother you, then it looks like they make a good one.
One custom builder who make a stem with a 4-bolt removable face plate is Brent Steelman:

Definitely not cheap, but an option. Good Luck!

As others mentioned, Nitto, Thomson and VO (and the ilk),
BUT
the one I really like is the Origin8:

Here's the Origin8 mentioned above. Cropped from a larger pic, but may show it well enough. 2 bolt cap, otherwise pretty nice.

Thanks- I need to update the gallery. I regularly build stems with removable face plates for customers that request them. They can be had in any combination of steerer and bar clamp type or size, in any length or angle. The photos on the site (including the bike photos) are just examples- every piece is made to order.
Thanks!

BL+1 I think it's a pretty nice stem.
IRD stems too:FWIW the IRD and the VO stem are the same. I have one of each and they are identical save the graphics.

Just went through this looking for a new stem for my lugged bike. As far as I could find, the only -17 degree silver stems are the VO/Dimension ones and Thomson X2 (the Zero 100 is close at 82 degrees but the silver ones seem to be hard to come by). If you want something less (-6ish or so), then lots more options (Nitto, Ritchey Classic, VO/Dimension/IRD, Thomson). I guess the days of level top tubes and level stems is disappearing.
Those Winter Bicycles stems are gorgeous, I may have to get one once I dial-in my fit with the new bars I'm putting on. The main reason to do so is that the diameter of the stem looks proportional to the rest of the bike instead of being oversized like all the other stems out there.

I have a brand new silver Thomson X2, +/-10, 130mm I would sell.

If 130 mm is too long, I have a silver X2 that you could have cheaply.

Nope...it is a long 1" to 1-1/8" shim that takes up the entire length of the steer tube above the headset...had it in my toolbox and I believe it was from a Profile stem with a huge stack height. I then use 1-1/8" spacers outside of the shim above and below the Syntace stem, with a 1-1/8" silver King headset cap. I originally did it this way just because I didn't have enough 1" spacers lying around (could have used a shorter shim just for the stem), but like how clean it looks.
Tai
I use a VO "tall stack" stem on my fixed commuter, I like it!

thanks for all of the suggestions. i just bought a polished DEDA from live2ridehard here on the forum. i suspect it will be the right length, but will investigate other options if it is not.

got a pic of your efforts? that's exactly what i'd like to do, but i spoke with ritchey on this exact topic and they told me it was a no-no to do what you did, citing potential metal fatigue.
dunno about that since i did it to a dura ace crank long ago with zero issues, but messing with the stem gave me pause.

I'm on the road without my computer...but...I posted some pics of the Chesini in the production bikes forum awhile back. I've had no problems...I'm far more "worried" about the Time Featherlight's 1" CF steerer! ;)

Thanks for that pointer to the Syntace F99 on eBay. I picked up one earlier today.
I love chrome or silver or even matte grey stems -- and, of course, not easy to find.

Tai, I'm trying to decide which way to go with the Fierte I recently acquired. This Velo Orange seems kind of tall though I like the polished look, the Pro Carbon stem below lacks eye appeal to me. That Syntace in chrome may be just the thing for this build.
