This is the text I posted last year in this thread (http://forums.thepaceline.net/showthread.php?t=92093), it seemed to have a good level of participation, and a good focus on actually riding bikes, so I'm bringing it back.

I'll propose this little challenge, over the next week (7 days), take a picture that tells the forum something about your riding. I know many folks on here ride in very diverse parts of the country/world, and it would be great if we get a cross section of the types of riding that people are doing this week -- everything from some of the epic rides folks do, to your commute.

Limit, 1 photo per member. Has to be a ride over the next 7 days, so don't go pulling out pics from that epic ride you did last summer. You don't need to go for most impressive, just share a bit the actual riding you do.

BBDave, no pics from France, either!

This pic is from last weekend's 50M ride to Delaware River as it passes through canyon. Road is 100's of feet above river with Bald Eagles riding updrafts. There is a 6 mile climb to get from the valley floor over the eastern canyon ridge, down to ancient river bed, then up canyon wall on road. BTW the road opened in mid 1800's as single lane dirt road until 1930. Most of the are was clear cut of forests, that were floated down river to railroad loading. BTW, that is a small MP3 player w/ speaker rubber banded to helmet. Everything from Clapton, to Boccelli.

Photo is taken at Rt 97, Hawks Nest, NY about 5 or so miles north of Port Jervis, NY [ Orange County ] This area is referred to as the foothills of the Catskills. OC is very large spanning between Hudson River at West Point Military Academy to the Delaware. In between are heavily eroded landscapes and valley floors. I acessed the road from Rte 6 to Rt 97. The river below is as beautiful [ canoe, kayak, whatever] as you will see in Yellowstone.

Can we also request that everyone who shares a pic tells us where the shot was taken, even just the state would be nice to know, any extra info is great. I love to see pics of members rides but lots of times there no location information and we're left wondering where the ride took place.

Great idea, again, Matt, thanks for the effort.

This is a picture of the Casse Desérte, Col d'Izoard. I rode it on August 3 from the North side, then dropped down the south side to take photos and soak in the Casse Déserte ambiance.

p.s. if the photo is too big I'll scale it down.

Thought a lot about this post. Lots of scenarios. Like a shot of me standing on the summit of a col with my son, that would have been for me a classic of what cycling is. Only he’s rarely here. Almost always with me in my imagination but haven’t figured out how to catch those scenes in a camera. Thought about the classic shot of my bike on a col. But that’s just about the bike on a col, nothing there to inspire me to ride. Finally just settled on a picture of a road because in the end for me that’s what this game is all about. Like when I was skiing, seeing a pic of some field of untracked on some gorgeous, steep slope would instantly make me want to go lay down some tracks. Or when I was a rock climber, seeing some fine slab of granite shooting up into the sky would have the same effect, had to go climb it. When I was a mountain biker it was seeing some single-track curving across a mountain that made my brain go all ballistic. Now it’s paved roads in the mountains that do that for me.

I’ve got lots of pics like that but the rules were had to be a shot from this week. Okay, pot luck week. Just wait to see what I end up riding. Turned out to be a very sweet pot luck because what I rode was the Col du Joly, today the most beautiful ride I’ve ever done. Had everything that makes riding a road bike for me all but addictive. Actually it might be addictive but probably shouldn’t say that because then some government would decide to outlaw it.

So here’s my shot, on the upper slopes on the way to Col du Joly, probably somewhere up around 1800 meters altitude. I shot this on the way up but knew it was for the way down. Came into it fast, pure sweetness. I love sweepers like that. For me this shot says about as much as any I’ve taken what it is about riding a road bike that makes me go a little nuts in the head.

I could have taken pictures of soybean fields and withered corn. And potholes, lots of potholes.

I did everyone a huge favor by not taking a camera today.

wow, that's sweet. you dont happen to have a gps file of that ride, do you?

It's the Upper Delaware Scenic Byway. You can ride from Port Jervis to Binghampton. It is a beautiful ride rolling in the hills along the Delaware.

http://www.upperdelawarescenicbyway.org/

You can do a loop a couple different ways. The easiest is ride Rt 97 up then ride on the dirt and local roads on the south side of the Delaware on the PA side.

I ride up Mt Diablo Bay Area CA at least once a week. I ride to the junction at 2500 feet evevation. Starting in Walnut Creek and heading up North Gate road and down south gate road thru Danville and back to walnut Creek it is 35 miles and 3 hours riding time. 3 1/2 if i stop for a slice of pizza at whole foods
Precentage of grade is 6 1/4 % for North Gate and 4 3/4 % for South Gate
Charles at 76
PS Record to top at 3850 feet evevation is 47 minutes

I spent the last two days there riding killer singletrack at 5500-6000 feet elevation. This singletrack I'm on went for miles through meadows, boulders and pines.

zmudshark, That would be the perfect photo to post in this thread. It's not about having the most epic picture or inspiring envy, it's about sharing the kind of riding you really do.

I think velotel really gets it.

If you ride crappy roads surrounded by soybeans and drought effected corn, show us that. It gives us perspective about the kind of rider you are. Sounds like you're a midwest hardman... in the belgian mold.

Taken yesterday on the Plains of Abraham trail, Mt. St. Helens of my friend and mountain bike mentor Allan. I met him in spin class and he inspired me to venture off road. I've owned mountain bikes for years but only rode them casually on dirt roads and trails near home. I was able to finish a 100 mile MTB race in Bend a few weeks ago thanks to him.

August 5 2012. Put the Hampsten out to graze and rest a bit in the Riesling vinyards on the E. Shore of Seneca Lake, heading East through Finger Lakes National Forest over the hump to Cayuga Lake on roads I rode as a kid with a red Fuji Sport 10, 2 inches too big with steel everything. Why does the Cinghiale feel slower 35 years later? The air was cool and moist, the land was fat. 4 lakes, 8 waterfalls, 85 miles of grapes and dairy farms. On days like that, anything is possible.

Great photo- and a serious question- how much hay does $300 get you in N. IL in a drought year? I know nothing, but see reason to worry, about our farmers this year- I think about that when I ride through cornfields.

Awesome job so far everyone. For those who haven't participated, Friday is the cut off. Show us the type of riding you're doing! It may not be as beautiful as some, or as well composed and artistic as others, but just show us the kind of stuff you see in your rides.

It is great to see the diverse conditions and types of riding everyone does. I love that the MTB folks are representing also!

Temps were in the 90's in Downtown L.A. when I got off work today, so I headed for the coast to do a early evening ride with a few of my buddies. Temps were in the mid-70's an hour later at Del Cerro Park, in Rancho Palos Verdes. It's a great little park with awesome views of the coastline and Catalina Island.
