Interesting. Looks like a Karate Monkey with a modified rear triangle. Why not just update the KM with this "feature"?
I like that they kept standard hub and BB spacing.

You don't even need pedals, it rolls so good. ;)

and here I was about to post a general request for education on the 29er platform thread! Looking to break into that arena and here is one more point of confusion for a n00b! it does look cool though.
I like it. Is it a replacement for the Ogre which takes 2.5in tires?

That may just be the mountain bike I was looking for.

It's been a year and three weeks and finally got a 29+ together... not a Surly but is brilliant, indeed.

Is that a good thing? KMs aren't highly praised, adding more chainstay seems like the wrong thing to do when people already complain that it's dead-feeling.

Depends what you want to do with the Krampus.
I rode a friend's on fire roads up at our cabin in July and it handled as I expected.
Like a KM with huge meats.
Great in mud and sand, for sure.
I happen to like more braze ons and a little more utility, so I was excited to hear about the Surly ECR.
It'll run the Knards and will provide more braze-ons for bike camping.
The Jones bars look comfy as well.

I also just read about the new Cogburn line which will be built in Minnesota.
A hunting rig, but a huge array of uses in the country where we ride in/along the BWCA.
Ice fishing, pheasant hunting, grouse/turkey hunting etc.
Add a BOB trailer for even more versatility.

Surly's philosophy on bikes is that a frame can do three things: Ride great, be light, and be inexpensive. They (with 4130) are proud to say that they accomplish two of these three. My first SS was a Karate Monkey, and a buddy is still winning races on it, despite conceding two pounds to the competition (due the frame alone-- it has a not-too-zoot build, but he has a serious engine). It was a wonderful bike-- excellent geometry, rode great both rigid and with a front shock. I actually prefer it to my next SS (won't name it here). I've also owned two Pugsleys, both excellent-- still in the 'hood and being enjoyed by friends-- and currently have a Moonlander and a Traveler's check. Hats off to Surly for making innovative, well-designed, great riding bikes that those on a budget can afford. If I could sneak it into the house, I'd add a Krampus.

You forget the best part which is that funky metallic green boat paint.

I rode a Krampus today--went to the LBS for a quick repair, and took a little test ride while my bike was being worked on. It was awesome--I felt like it would roll over anything in its path. :bike: And the paint was green and sparkly... mmm.
