I'm shopping for a point and shoot camera. Something small and simple is best and I'm willing to spend around $250.

Any words of wisdom would be appreciated.

We're replacing a 7 year old 7 megapixl point and shoot. I recently saw some photos from a friend's new camera and realized there have been some real improvements in the technology.

thanks in advance

Can I suggest that you try (http://forums.thepaceline.net/showthread.php?t=104586) a (http://forums.thepaceline.net/showthread.php?t=100454) search (http://forums.thepaceline.net/showthread.php?t=104586)?

I don't mean to shut down discussion but there have been lots of threads on this that aren't that old (so the answers aren't out of date) with quite a few replies and good information.

FWIW, I recently bought a Panasonic TS20. Small, waterproof (to a point), fits in a jersey pocket, fits your budget and takes great pictures.

There have been some very definite improvements in the technology, but not a whole lot of meaningful ones at the $250 level for full-list up to date cameras. The good news is that you can get something a little behind the bleeding edge, like a Canon S90 or S95 or Panasonic LX5 or similar for that price range and those are VERY nice little cameras, even if they've been surpassed recently. The best premium point and shoot pocket camera at the MOMENT (and I expect this to change in the next few months as more manufacturers come out with new models) is the Sony RX100, which also has the on-topic advantage of sharing a name with an old Shimano component group... But that's a $650-$700 camera. I think compared to what you're used to, an S95 or LX5 would really amaze you with their quality and I think you could find either of them slightly used or on closeout, or maybe refurbished, for about $250.

Agree with gone that Lumix TS 20 is perfect for what you are looking for. I have the TS10 and it has been great. Their new TS4 is probably slightly better than TS20, but more than twice the price.

agree on the canon S95. Google Ken Rockwell. He's got a ton of reviews on cameras in all budgets.

The S95 is still my go to camera on the bike but RAY and Ken Rockwell are the experts in my view.
