View Full Version : Shaving my legs - not as cool as I rememeber!

After putting in some good rides and getting in better shape than I have in many years, I decided it was time to shave my legs for the first time in 5 or 6 years. I'd forgotten what a pain the first shave is. Hair everywhere, takes forever, shower gone cold. And than I get out and much to my disgrace, my legs aren't near as tanned as I thought they were. So here I am now, no hair and pasty white legs that scream to everyone that there is NO hair! Like a neon sign, No hair here! Just an old man that wishes he's 20 something again! Oh well, it could be worse. Oh wait, it is. I'm still an old fat guy riding a bike, with shaved legs.

Great post! Made me laugh.

On the topic: I never understood why people who don't race would ever shave their legs. The expected advantages (what if I fall, etc.) are far outweighed by the ongoing grotesque display of bald limbs. IMHO. :fight:

I was wishing that I had shaved my legs one day last week, after heading out for an after work ride on the MTB, I spent close to half an hour pulling ticks off my legs.

That would have been a lot easier to do with the pins shaved bare.

Personally, I was thought shaved legs looked better than Sasquatch ones. To each his own.

But agree, that first shave is a pain.

Funny, after rugby matches I would have the same thing happen. Short shorts, dirty, hairy, beat up muscular legs...some chicks really dig them.

Something about being with a REAL man. :)

Plenty of business to go around. Cheers!

Nothing like miday rides to get rid of the moon tan. It might even take all weekend for several weeks, maybe all summer, at least that's how I would break the news at home.

You didn't chop the long stuff off with the a trimmer first?

Do that and I'll almost guarantee you that you won't have an issue with the razor.

'Course, I've sidestepped all that and just went to using an old electric ala 'Frank' Moser.

True that! Shall we do a gallery of forum members' shaved legs photos? I doubt it will change my general aesthetic leaning, but the entertainment factor will be high nonetheless.

Well it could be that you aren't as cool as you were, or thought you were, the first time.
No worries, tans come easy!

Mine does too. And when you think about how particular a lot of gay men are, it's high praise to get hit on.

I think my days of getting hit on by gay men are long gone. Heck, I can't even get hit on by my wife anymore. She just doesn't appreciate the things I do to make myself beautiful.

I stopped shaving my legs years ago because people expect you to be a fast rider. Now, I don't let them down. Hairy and slow. Time for a beer.

Just up to the tan line on the legs. No shaving of the arms or chest. That'd be just weird!

Just up to the tan line on the legs. No shaving of the arms or chest. That'd be just weird!

That makes about zero sense...

*deep breath*

...considering the fact that the reason cyclists shave theirs legs is to make cleaning road rash easier, as hair can messy such an area and even infect it. Based on the fact that when you fall, your most likely to hit the upper quad, hip, and buttocks area, shaving only to the line of your shorts holds pretty much no value except for style points.

I wish I hadn't done so much yard work today. Otherwise I'd be out on a ride instead of posting here so vehemently.

I've crashed hard twice and both times it took out the side of the knee, the hands and the side of the elbows, so it makes all the sense in the world to only shave up to the tan line. I did have a bruise on a hip but no road rash. I learned to roll in high school gym class and I guess the instinct never left me. Both wrecks I ended up on my feet before the bike stopped moving.

Judging by the fights I've seen between cyclists, I'd say super models probably have an advantage in a fight. Especially against climbing specialists.

...so it makes all the sense in the world to only shave up to the tan line.but then you end up with "hair shorts!" i could never decide where to stop, it always looked funny to me, so i did my legs completely a couple times but eventually gave up and just let em grow out...cx season is coming anyways

there is also the embro argument...which seems to be a wonderful thing (according to friends who use it) though I have no personal experiences. anyone try embro'n their hairy legs? hair as natural embro?

also, shaving makes your calfs/quads look approximately 78.5% more formidable on the start line. that mental edge is EVERYTHING

hairy legs is a good excuse to ride slow.

if you have shaved legs and still suck, you are "that guy."

don't be "that guy."

1. Wahl clippers on the first pass.
2. Gillette Sensor for subsequent pass.
3. profit!!

If I let my legs go too long my wife tells me to go shave. And I'm "that guy". Shaved legs, last on all the climbs. I don't care.

To each their own, etc.

This was the year I stopped shaving my legs...still getting used to the look of fur and lycra together. Reality sank...I got two kids four and under...have gained about 10-15 lbs (although to be fair, it appears some of that has been in upper body musle mass that I didn't have before). I actually do have fairly dark skin and decent muscle tone...I just don't have the time anymore!

The bottom half of my shins are permanently bald from years and years of skiing in racing boots, so recently I found myself thinking about shaving the hairy parts. I've been accident prone since I was very young and the scars accumulated over 50 years of abuse are at least somewhat hidden by the hair.

Which way to go, hairy and scars or bald and scars? Or said another way, ugly or uglier?

kong79
07-16-2012, 08:31 PM
Go with uglier, chicks dig scars, or so I've been told.

kong79
07-16-2012, 08:37 PM
Maybe it is stupid to shave if I don't race anymore, but I was hoping it would make me feel like I did when I was younger and in great shape. It didn't, but at least I'll stand out in a crowd.
