Unfortunately, it's getting to be "That Time of Year" again, when the road miles start to drop off due to bad weather and I regretfully start debating on whether to train indoors again. YUK!!! I need a new trainer this year and was wondering what the favorites are? I remember reading a post long ago about a trainer that is supposedly the best, but is rarely advertised. I remember finding thier website but didn't bother saving it. Any ideas?

I believe that you are looking for the Kurt Kinetics trainer. I don't know the website.

1up USA would be my choice. http://www.1upusa.com/
BTW, they sell the Kurt, as well.
If you really care about training, get some Kreitler Challenger rollers, as well.

No mention of the Computrainer?!?
It makes riding indoors tolerable. Spinscan is neat too - :)

Started thinking - you know what would be really cool? Rollers that work with a computrainer! Imagine wireless sensors for cadence, etc... rollers for the feel, and 3D software for the eyes. I wonder if there is a way to use a band off of the rollers to turn a computrainer - Hmmmmmmm........

The 1UP is a beautiful piece of equipment, but isn't the easiest to work with -- changing the resistence level is a pia, and changing the skewer clamp to accomodate different bikes is even worse. On the other hand, it's very quiet and comes with a lifetime guarantee. And since the don't sell in stores, you can try it for two months and return it no questions asked (they even pay shipping!). If you're only using one bike and don't need to change resistance levels, I'd recommend it.
I've used Performance's (rebadged Elite) trainer for several years and highly recommend it. It's quite stable and comparatively quiet. The newer "Millenium" version is adjustable fluid with a spring-loaded roller and a fly wheel. Nice. Wait for a sale or a coupon and you can get it for well under $200 shipped.

If I can get motivated to ride anything indoors, I like to switch back and forth from Kreitlers and a Cyclops from time to time to help break up the boredom.

use any trainer
but

Trainers suck. Trainers make you soft. Get out there and ride. Find a beater. Find a cross bike. Find a bike that accepts cross tires and fenders and ride. You'll get more tail than Sinatra or eRichie. I don't remember which but ride outside.
Curt in MN where it gets cold.

Train inside. If you find your mind wondering and your fitness fading, buy Arnie Baker's "High Intensity Training."
I'm no fan of garbage miles, inside or out. Arnie's HIT is one of the best and toughest programs I've seen -- and it's best performed inside on a trainer.

After about two years myine is starting to make a little noise on the "downhills" but I won't do without it. Also, nobody else I have spoken with has had this noise at all so I would recommend without hesitation. Heck, I'll drive down to Basque country in the spring and get it fixed if need be!

That's what we do in TEXAS, where we can ride year round. But in Nebraska? Take a look at the opening of the movie FARGO, that was a good representation of the stretch of highway that passes by my Dad's farm in Blair, Nebraska. hehehe

Thanks everyone for the suggestions. I'll look into these a little closer. And yes, it get's a little bad out here in mid Nebraska in the winter. I'm just not hardcore enough to brave it all the time. I've been known to take my MTB out in a blizzard for some fun, but I can't really call that training.
