I am looking to have a new wheel set built: HED C2 rims, White Industry Hubs and Sapim cx-ray spokes.

Who does the collective recommend?

Thanks.

taking a quote from Jack brunk's book, both ergott and eschelon john build world class wheels and you wont go wrong with either of them.

Agree with angry, heard nothing but great things about both ergott and echelon john... i actually ordered a set of A23 wheels from echelon john, will be delivered in a few days, so no experience with the build yet, but he was easy to work with and has been top notch all around.

Guy at my local shop builds awesome wheels. But any of the above mentioned have a great reputation as well.

A big ol' +1 to oldpotatoe (Peter) at Vecchio's in Boulder. He is currently building up some wheels for me...Record hubs, Ambrosio Nemesis. It has been a pleasure working with Peter on this build. He knows his stuff.

I've heard good things about the other 2 guys as well.

Seems there are a few good ones!

Justin Spinelli @ Luxe Wheelworks stops by here every once in a while. Check out his Tumblr...

Agreed!! John build me some awesome wheels!

I'd add Justin Spinelli to this list.

He just moved into an awesome space in Boston, so he is my most local wheelbuilder. He has a lot of followers over at V-Salon and he has always been most helpful answering questions. I have some 29er wheels from him incoming, so I can't personally attest to his wheels yet, but his reputation is excellent.

I second Dave's recommendation of Joe Young - terrific service and wheels.

For me as well. My Joe Young wheels are several years old now and as true as the day they arrived.

There are a lot of great wheel builders so for me I would use a builder that had similar ideas of what makes a bike great and
Old potatoe has that
Cheers imho:)

I have wheels built by Ergott, Old Potatoe (Pete @ Vecchio's) and Justin Spinelli and all are quality builds without any issues/problems. I also have wheels built by Joe Young, who's not a forumite but his reputation is renown.

All have some different opinions about parts and builds (eg some might err on the conservative side if you're weight is on the cusp like 185 lbs), so you should ask each of them about what you want.

In answer, 11.4 had this to say:

On this site, Ergott is first-rate. I also have no hesitation recommending Wheelbuilder.com. Rich Sawiris there is one of the best track wheelbuilders around and is fast and reliable. He knows how to build any wheel and I've never seen a problem in his work.

I have wheels from ErgoTT, Justin Spinelli, and Peter @ Vecchios. All are superb.

I've had Eric Gottesman build all of my wheels to date. So far after thousand's of miles on both single track and pavement, I've not had one single issue with any of the wheels. I'm sure that any of the builders mentioned will produce a equally superb wheel. Were lucky to have a great selection of builders available.

An option to bring the cost down and not lose much in quality would be swapping A23 rims for the Hed C2s.

All those mentioned are great, but I have to add Terry Wittenberg of RTWheelcraft.com. He just built me a set of Hed C2/King/CX-Ray tubulars and they are fantastic. He has built for me before. He is obsessive about quality and he has a super quick turn around.

Both Echelon John and Peter at Vecchio's have built excellent wheels for me. I would stick with either of them. No need to venture further...:)

Agreed - Echelon_John is great to work with. The other's mentioned have top notch records as well, though I haven't worked with them. If I had the cash, I'd have each of them build me a set of hoops!

BTW, anyone know whetever happened to that oddsandendos guy? I think Mike Garcia was his name. He's not a regular here (as far as I know) but treated me very well on a build for my Concours back in '05. A set based on DT Swiss RR1.1 rims. I loved those wheels...they served me well for many years.

I have 2 sets of A23's from John for over a year now--still great like the first day I picked'em up. I actually loaned a set out to some wrenches at my LBS who were interested in the wide rim phenomena.

I have a set of Mike Garcia wheels that must be at least 5 years old relegated to roller duty now but have been awesome. I think I read Mike had some personal problems along the way but I dont have any solid rumors.

I thought most of these builders could not get C2 rims anymore.

I have wheels from numerous people mentioned in this thread.

Until 2007, all my wheels were from Joe Young. I was then looking for somebody closer, in NewEngland. Since 2010 my wheels are being built by Justin Spinelli.

If you believe that a wheel is moe than the sum of it's parts I think you are looking for superb craftsmanship and expert advice. I believe the necessary skills come from either having built thousands of wheels for toughest demands (racing), having competed at a very high level, or, ideally, both.

Cept I have no access to Sapim spokes really. I like their spokes but a lack of a distributor that has all lengths, all types, just doesn't really exist in the US.

DT, no problem. These other guys that are wheelbuilders, not a bike shop, can often get wholesale Sapim...from Belgium, but unless I order 15,000 or so spokes, LBS(Little Bike Shop), really cannot.
