Possibly a very strange question, but how do you get on your bike? Which type are you:

Swing a leg over, straddle it, clip in with a foot and push off;

Stand on a pedal, push off, and swing a leg over;

"Cross mount (walk/run along side, jump, throw a leg over)...or:

other?

Why?

I'm pretty comfortable with the first and third. But the second one just does't feel right for some reason.

The first.

2nd for me. It's quicker than the 1st, I'm always late, and I'm not coordinated enough for the 3rd.

Mostly 1.
Sometimes 3 on my CX bike, but never on my road bikes due to Keo cleats...talk about looking like a dork.
Rarely 2, due to being told during my formulative racing years that this could possibly damage a wheel.

Option 1 for me. Every time.

I swing a leg over the bars not the saddle...both on and off....

Both 1 and 3...one on a normal ride, 3 in a race.

Interesting timing. I asked this same question on a local board last week after watching someone instruct a newby to mount by clipping in the left foot and swinging a leg over. I haven't done that since getting my first pair of Look pedals in the mid 80's. I'd think the angle of the ankle would be really awkward. I straddle and clip.

I would fall if I tried the other options.

I run and jump on to the saddle from the rear and grab the handle bars. This gets the bike rolling along and I have a lot of time to get my feet in the stirrups...I mean pedals.

#2 since I was about 5 years old, and that was a while ago, before men walked on the moon. Hard habit to break, even with clipless pedals. I dismount in reverse, swing leg then stop and unclip left foot. Helps that I use Speedplay.

If I had regular platform pedals, I'd do 2 more often. Don't really do it much with my speedplays. Just straddle first, clip, then go.

One for me and always the right leg first. Always been this way for me. Sometimes CX style when racing the mtb and I cant clean something.

THIS is the correct answer-- adds extra 'souplesse' to all those miles on my 'fixie' that 'taught me how to pedal.'

I run and jump on to the saddle from the rear and grab the handle bars. This gets the bike rolling along and I have a lot of time to get my feet in the stirrups...I mean pedals.

For dismounts (not "getting off" :no: ) do you:

a) swing leg aft and over the saddle, or
b) forward and over the bars

I usually do (a) but on a downhill slope sometimes (b).

I think as they get older you find more and more guys doing (b).

As long as I'm facing forward, it's not an issue for me.

I used to ride with a guy who insisted on kicking a leg forward, over the bars, to mount/dismount.

This way, you get a warmup even before you start pedaling! Must have trick for race season.

Not only do I find it a bit faster, but because I'm not so flexible at the hip, when my left foot is already clipped in and at the bottom of the stroke, the right leg doesn't have as far up to swing as with #1.

ha...I have observed that and now I know why. of course the other way to do it is to lean the bike so it is more angled over and then your leg wont have to swing as high. that is how I have to get on the mtb tandem sometimes. if reall bad flex I see folks lean the bike and swing their leg over the h-bar, instead of the seat since the hbar can be a few cm lower.

for me, #1 always. unless on a CX course, and then it's #3
