Think of what pole vaulters have to endure...

Some of this sounds familiar, but worse. The poles are 17' long.

For Pole-Vaulters, Clearing the Bar Is the Easy Part

Even after they figure out how to get their equipment to the airport, pole-vaulters often do not know if the poles will be accepted on their planes or what the fee will be.

I have flown on planes where 17 foot poles may not even fit down the center of the aisle, nevermind the cargo hold!

I'm surprised some airline hasn't seized this as an opportunity for olympic sponsorship, and making interesting commercials... but that would require that they actually were interested in doing things that made their customers happy, as opposed to raping them with fees.
