Best actor of his generation, hands down. Always subtle, always pulls a character study which just draws you into the storyline, capable of the greatest versatility, yada yada.

Not to say I always 'like' him in some roles, but - sheesh - he's got some talent.

Discuss. (I'd appreciate it if this thread remained a Lance free zone)

I felt there was a role for him in 'Life Aquatic'. Maybe as leader of the pirates, Angelica Huston's yoga instructor, or as Jeff Goldblum's special friend. He could have very, very, very easily been Ned Plimpton, Stevesy's son.

As with many things, not sure there is a best. But I will agree, he is a hell of an actor.

I recently saw Boogie Nights for the first time and he was great in that, but I don't know about THE best. Way too subjective to crown and absolute best, but I do like him.

I wouldn't change a THING about that movie. One of my favorites...

Zissou definitely one of my favorites ... "it's the scientific community, man".

PSH has been all downhill since Boogie Nights.

He's up there and he is one of my favorites. I agree that best is subjective, but for me, the current American actor that I think of as being nearest the top is Sean Penn. Just my opinion...

One of my favorite actors, he's incredibly talented. He seems to get typecast as the nervous strait-laced type (big lebowski, happiness, etc) and it's good to see him get some diversity in his roles. He seems capable of handling anything he's given.

OP is OT, but never mind. PSH is an outstanding actor.

Plugkev: Downhill since Boogie nights?! You must have missed Charlie Wilson's War, coincidentally Julia Roberts' finest role and in the top handful of performances by Tom Hanks.

That's the one I was going to mention. Roberts is unrecognizable in a character role, Hanks plays very well against type as a boozing Congressman, and Hoffman is brilliant (and frequently hilarious) as a cranky CIA agent.

Is he a movie or a TV actor?

I've heard the name before, but can't name a single thing he's been in.

Brandt: Mr. Lebowski is prepared to make a generous offer to you to act as courier, once we get instructions for the money.
The Dude: Why me, man?
Brandt: He believes the culprits might be the very people who, uh, soiled your rug, and you are in a unique position to confirm or disconfirm that suspicion.
The Dude: He thinks the carpet pissers did this?
Brandt: Well Dude, we just don't know.

What's funny is that I recognize the face, but I have no idea why because if I look at the list of credits on that page, I don't think I have seen any of those titles.

Thanks. (I guess I was being super lazy, not doing that myself.)

Yup, I have not seen a single movie in which he's acted. Apparently he chooses roles in movies that aren't my cup of tea.

Really? That's fantastic, in the true sense of the word. You've not seen Twister?

Anyway, it's all just a bit of levity because I wanted a diversionary topic. Point taken about Sean Penn and use of 'best', but seriously, why not nominate Mickey Rourke if you're that way inclined? [not aimed at Louis]

Looking at it again PSH has quite a palmares...

Twister, the tornado chaser movie? Nope - not my type.

Plus, once you've seen The Wizard of Oz you don't need to see any more tornado movies, because you've seen the best. ;)

Yeah, that Twister. My partner is a 'disaster' movie tragic so I get to watch them all. Some repeatedly.
