Happy summertime people! It's about time. March was unusually warm and sunny every day, April was cold and rainy every day, May was a mix and now summer is both here in solar spirit and date (my nephews remind me June 20th is the first day).

Enjoy your summer. Viper will have weekday Ride Reports now, on occassion, as I can get home a bit early and ride in the heat; when the temps go to 90* or above, I <3 it.

I briefly think about whining when it's 90+ and humid here in Minnesota...but then I remember that these conditions are a he!! of a lot better than the other extreme we get here.

So yesterday to celebrate, I did 81 hilly solo miles in the high heat and humidity, and followed up with 61 solo miles in only slightly cooler weather this morning.

Don't forget, as any new englander knows... it's not the heat. it's the humidity.

We had amazing weather last week. I rode my bike, my motorcycle, hiked, slept with the windows open, didn't use the heat or a/c in my house for a week. I tried to enjoy it as much as possible because as much as we know it is coming this kinda heat SUCKS!

I am having an issue with my car's a/c. So, currently, I am not a fan of having to drive all over Long Island and I feel like a puddle of myself has been left in the seat each time I get out of the car. I am sticky all the time. But on the bike, it's wonderful.
Ride safely everyone. People tend to forget common sense when the heat rises!

. . I was a news photographer and would have to go out hunting feature art on hot summer days. One of the convenience stores there had their "The Hawg" soft drink that was, I think, 48 or 64 oz. 7-11 also had their Big Gulp . . .

No AC in my little VW Rabbit, but grab one o' these big boys full of ice and Mountain Dew and I wa set for the afternoon! :)

Ah, memories . . .

From National Weather Service:

...AIR QUALITY ALERT IN EFFECT FROM 11 AM WEDNESDAY TO 11 PM WEDNESDAY...

THE NEW YORK STATE DEPARTMENT OF ENVIRONMENTAL CONSERVATION HAS ISSUED AN AIR QUALITY HEALTH ADVISORY FOR THE FOLLOWING COUNTIES...

SUFFOLK...NASSAU...RICHMOND...KINGS...QUEENS...NEW YORK...BRONX...WESTCHESTER...ROCKLAND.

AIR QUALITY LEVELS IN OUTDOOR AIR ARE PREDICTED TO BE GREATER THAN AN AIR QUALITY INDEX VALUE OF 100 FOR THE POLLUTANT OF OZONE. THE AIR QUALITY INDEX...OR AQI...WAS CREATED AS AN EASY WAY TO CORRELATE LEVELS OF DIFFERENT POLLUTANTS TO ONE SCALE. THE HIGHER THE AQI VALUE, THE GREATER THE HEALTH CONCERN.

WHEN POLLUTION LEVELS ARE ELEVATED...THE NEW YORK STATE DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH RECOMMENDS THAT INDIVIDUALS CONSIDER LIMITING STRENUOUS OUTDOOR PHYSICAL ACTIVITY TO REDUCE THE RISK OF ADVERSE HEALTH EFFECTS. PEOPLE WHO MAY BE ESPECIALLY SENSITIVE TO THE EFFECTS OF ELEVATED LEVELS OF POLLUTANTS INCLUDE THE VERY YOUNG, AND THOSE WITH PRE-EXISTING RESPIRATORY PROBLEMS SUCH AS ASTHMA OR HEART DISEASE. THOSE WITH SYMPTOMS SHOULD CONSIDER CONSULTING THEIR PERSONAL PHYSICIAN.

mmm, time to break out those camelback insulated bottles. does anyone have 'em? i bought one as a test just to see if they help keep things cool(er) for a little bit longer. typically on hot day ride i will toss regular bottles in freezer the night before. keeps things cooler for an extra hour, every little bit helps!

I do have them. And I use them. They unquestionably keep things cooler longer. Add ice or freeze, and you're talking probably 1.5 -2 hours of cold even in 90 degree + temps.

Commuted home the other day when it was 101 out. 28 miles to get home and I limped the final 5!!! Still trying to get used to commuting on a 26er.

I use them. It helps some, but is by no means like a thermos. Put icecubes in your bottles (cant say about freezing the bottle) and it will stay cold a good deal longer than a regular bottle.

I had a business meeting today in Tuscaloosa...it was a bit warm for sure, but our client said that we haven't seen anything yet. On a side note, everywhere you go in Tuscaloosa it says "Roll Tide Roll"...what are they referring to?

I'm up at 5am, ready now to ride. This is unnatural and definitely not healthy to be up this early. I'll sleep well tonight.

I decided a long time ago that I wouldn't complain about Summer weather. It can be 100+ and 95% humidity and I won't complain on my ride. It's still better than trying to ride when it's 15 degrees with a windchill of -20.

Jow up, rub down, off I go!

I would much rather ride in 38 degree weather than 98 !!!

Excepting D2R2, I won't even ride at all if it's over 85 degrees

On road at 5, perfecto weather, sunrise and all.

And back home before the crazy's hit the road jacked up on caffeine, texting while driving, and morning meetings...

My only issue with the heat/humidity is a greater propensity to cramp. I sweat alot (picture retired Knick Patrick Ewing - sweat running off his chin when shooting foul shots) and can't replenish my electrolytes enough despite taking supplements (magnesium, potassium, calcium) and energy drinks (Nunn and Hammer).
