I've always wanted one and I considered my next bike to be a DeSalvo-build, with a Greg Lemondish paintjob. This will arrive from Vienna, Austria in a week or so, will become my Fall project, thwart will be my consultant, it will wear Campy alloy and I thank Greg LeMond for being the cyclist he was and riding the way he did:

i bought mine the following year, summer of '90. built it up with dura-ace -- sacrelige i know, but i was a poor college student trying to replace my stolen race-bike! raced from '90 to '99 mine is fairly well beat-up, with a slight downward bow in the top-tube and a slight rearward cant of the fork-legs. these days it alternates between my trainer and a fixie. lots of good memories on this beast!

we have the same model, the SL, with the chromed fork and right chainstay. the lower models (cromor, aelle/tretubi) had little-to-no chrome, and the higher models (ms, tsx, slx) added fully-chromed rear triangles.

Good choice sounds fun.

The first bike race i ever saw was when the Tour de Trump, including Greg, came to Baltimore harbor for a criterium in 1989. I think Davis Phinney won the stage, but it might have been someone else on his team.

I was inspired and got rid of my Schwinn Traveler that i only had for a few months, and bought a Bianchi road bike. A few weeks later, Greg won the TDF. I taped most of the stages on my vcr.

I had the Cromor version as a travel/vacation bike. Rode really well despite the low-end pipes. Lost in shipping; still breaks my heart.

Great score Viper, love that frame. This was my Lemond tribute bike. Lemond Team Zed. By Billato of Italy,Imported and painted by Ten Speed Imports 1990-92.
I've owned 4 different models of the Lemond labeled Billato frames.

Nice, but if you really want to be "authentic," you NEED to put on some old Mavic parts like 851 or the harder to find SSC stuff! Alternatively, Greg also raced on the old Campy C-Record. In either case, its going to be hard to find, expensive or both! Good Luck!

Team *Z*, had a team sweatshirt, sheet, circa 1989? (gotta find that pic:crap:), cool stuff. Those Bottecchia's were the joint, back in the day. There was one hanging at Kissena Cycles (cool assed shop in Queens NY, blocks away from where I grew up, had a steel Olmo hanging I begged Angelo, the owner, to let me just touch, every time I went in. Closed and long gone :(). Woulda gave a kidney for one.

Just kidding, this is my dream frame also and every night I scan the classifieds here looking for one.

Back in the '90's, there was a shop in the Gladstone area of Kansas City that had one on the floor. It was out of my price range but I was there once a week or so to drool. Sadly, the shop is long gone.

Post pictures and ride reports when completed!

Well, Greg raced bikes from this company when he rode steel:

If you want to be authentic.
