the guys at the hipster store don't tell you fixes don't stop. So i will. Fixies don't stop. Stop sign? Fixie don't care. Car coming turning in front of you at a three-way stop? Fixie laugh. Want chipotle? Nope. Fixie want protein powder/beet/purple carrot/bee pollen juice and won't stop till he gets it. Fixie has a mind of his own.Funny. :)

It's photos like the above where aliens just won't get us. How could they appreciate the matching colored socks/bra? Seriously, human's humor is it's greatest gift, not logic, nor reason.

Thank goodness my MBC fixie is way bigger than that one. Otherwise, that might be me in the picture...

(They've updated the decals)

Worst is hipsters who give up riding fixies and don't put brakes on their single speeds. No...you're not hearing that wrong. I once saw a hipster COAST through a red light at a 5 point intersection on a single speed w/o brakes. His girlfriend followed him right through.

too old to be a hipster. Too wise, too grumpy. My fixed gear bikes have brakes an I use 'em.

But... back in the day... anyone remember Dunlop Volleys? Do US citizens even know what a Volley is?

Before tennis players grunted and before sneakers came in 127 flavours with pump up soles or [gasp] even velcro, there were Dunlop Volleys. Tennis shoes. Part trainer, part plimsole, a soft rubber sole bonded on to a canvas upper. You could buy them anyway you wanted so long as it was white with a green and gold band.

Where is this going? Well, well had 'skid kid' bikes. stripped down bikes with a single speed gear, steel 26 or 27in wheels, some other crap and really wide bullhorn bars (colloquially 'AJ's). You could ride 'em, rough ride them, wheelstand them, race them, dirt track them, crash them. They were great. No brakes.

Dunlop Volleys had a smooth but rippled sole, soft rubber, and the approved method of stopping was to jam your left foot behind the seat tube so the sole of your shoe rested on the tyre. As it squeezed in against the chainstay bridge you got more braking; pretty much the best way to do it was the lock the wheel, throw the bike sideways and skid the back wheel around 90º. 180ºs were possible, don't think I ever managed a 360º. A good summer holiday wore through at least 3 pairs of Volleys...

I survived, somehow.

Sounds like a Converse All-Star. Hipsters wear these today. Throwback cool.

forgot to mention, when I toured with bands stagehands used to judge the length of a tour by how many pairs of Volleys they needed to pack.

That's actually an awesome Cinelli track frame for sale by the failed hipster. Too bad they butchered it with the resulting build.
