I have a new iPad. I wanted another charger to leave at work so I bought a genuine Apple charger on eBay. Doesn't work, I get the Not Charging alert on the charging icon. Today I received two 6 ft long KHOMO brand cables to use with my original charger so I can use the iPad while it's charging. Both cables, plugged into my original charger, give me the Not Charging alert. When I switch back to the Apple cable, it starts charging. Finally, I took the eBay charger and used the original Apple cable, and it charges. So it looks as though all three cables I bought after the original iPad purchase don't work.

What's up? Has Apple figured out a way to make all other cables not work?

greatly doubt it.

I use an Apple cable but frequently plug it into the charger for my blackberry and it charges just fine.

I also plug my iPad into the dock on my clock radio and it charges just fine. I would think if they were going to zap cables they would zap non-apple chargers and docks too.

Actually, now I think about it, I have a Griffin cable that is probably 4 years old and it charges the iPad just fine.

Can I recommend you post your question on the Apple Forums (https://discussions.apple.com/community/ipad)?

I've gotten the best help from other Apple users.

As a former Apple employee, I can tell you that there is a ton of stuff on Ebay with the Apple logo that's not made by Apple. It's not worth saving the money and it can often damage your iPad.

Your problem is tablets (this is not an ipad specific issue) include chargers which accept a USB plug just like a phone charger, camera charger, etc..

But Tablets require a higher current out of the charger because the batteries are so much larger. An iPad battery is larger than the entire volume of most phones.

For example.

- iPad charger can charge iPhone
- iPhone charger cannot charge iPad (Unless apple has recently changed this)
- My micro USB phone charger cannot charge my Android tablet
- My Kindle charger cannot charge my Android tablet or iPad, etc..

They don't really make it clear but there is an output current rating on the chargers. You need a higher power charger for the iPad. If you look at the iPad charger that does work, and get another one that is equally powerful, it will work. But the vast majority of chargers are not going to work. Off the top of my head most of my USB chargers are in the range of 0.5-0.8A and tablets need >1A to charge. That's just a guess though.

This is the same reason why you can plug an iPhone into your PC/Mac and it will charge and you can't plug an iPad or Android tablet into the same USB jack and charge it. There are few newer apple laptops that have special USB jacks for this but the vast majority will not charge a tablet.

Thought that was my problem. I have been having this problem too of charging or what to me seem that the iPad is charging too slow.
Internet websites will tell you that the iPhone charger can but it hasn't worked well for me.
