Does anyone know of a 29er tire that will perform well on dry single-track, fire roads, and the occasional paved road?

700x37 Paselas might work. Cheap experiment.

The Racing Ralph's work good ...as well as Specialized Renegade and Fast Track tires and the Continental Race King's. Also the Kenda Small Block Eight's.

There are a number of small knob low volume tires that work well.

I really like the Specialized Renegade and Fast Track tires plus ...if you don't like the Specialized tires they have a 90 day guarantee that you can exchange the tires for another Specialized model. No one else does that which is pretty cool.

Clarification question: Are these tubeless tires?

The WTB Nanoraptors (http://www.wtb.com/products/tires/29er/nano-29er/) have been the traditional choice of Tour Divide racers.

I also just picked up a set of the Bruce Gordon Rock and Roads (http://www.bgcycles.com/rock-n-road-tire.html) (the "original" 29er tire) and they roll extremely well on pavement.

Kenda Small Block 8's would work well for you. I am also really liking the Maxxis Ikon, although they are quite expensive.

I love the Maxxis Crossmarks for riding to the trail on the road and their excellent performance on dry trails. They have a fairly continuous center ridge that allows them to roll fast. You looking for tubeless or regular?

Here they are tubeless for $59 per on Amazon (http://www.amazon.com/Maxxis-Cross-Mark-Tubeless-Black/dp/B004TMVCHU). They wear pretty well, I put on a lot of miles on my 26ers and I have a set in the office waiting for my 29er to arrive.

I've had good luck with WTBs, although wider versions than you would want. They are heavier than other brands by the numbers but that extra weight seems to be in good spots making them durable tires. I've seen too many gashed sidewalls on lightweight racing tires.
Good luck.

nanoraptor, crossmark, racing ralph, as stated.
also look at kenda karma and smallblock8.

I just mounted a schwalbe hans dampf front and nobby nic rear... much more fun, if not as fast.

Racing Ralph is on the pricey side however I do run one on the rear of my 29er. It's a great tire.

Kenda Small Block 8 as previously stated. They have a very low profile.
Kenda Slant Six - Slightly larger profile.

My fast 29er combo of choice was Ignitor 2.1 (fr) / Crossmark 2.1 (rr). I think i raced sea otter on sb8 rear / rampage front but found the front was way overkill for the terrain. Cossmark or SB8 F&R was a nightmare in the corners IMO. I'd consider the Ignitors up front. Very light and hook up well in the corners.

Racing ralph's or rocket ron's in 2.25. They run narrower than listed but still the only tires i'll use.

Small Block 8's are awesome on pavement.
