I am trying to finish getting the parts for my dirt road bike and have a question about the cassette. I want a 11/34: any reason a 9 speed cassette is not a fit with 10 speed drivetrain?

Hey man,
Different spacing. You can get a 10-sp 11-34 cassette, though.

Is that what you're asking?

Road or mtn has nothing to do with it.

If you have a 10 speed road shifter, there are 10 speed wide range cassettes
that are going to work, there is no need for a 9 speed cassette, now that
shimano has 10 speed mtn drivetrains.

The issue you need to address is if your current rear derailleur and chain
are going to be long enough, depending on what you have currently.
