Remembering those who have made the ultimate sacrifice.

We plan on attending the service and parade in our town today. It's always a pretty emotional event for a lot of the older folks, and we work hard to emphasize to our kids that their freedom is enjoyed, because many young men and women didn't get the chance to come home to their families.

Its a significant day, indeed. I always have had a flag holder on the house, and put out the flag on the appropriate holidays. When the kids asked why, I could explain and make the connection for them.

Our thanks to those who put it all out there for their country.

Went to a memorial service yesterday for a young man (22 yrs) from my town who was lost at sea aboard the USS Gudgeon, a submarine, in 1944 on its 12th war patrol. Since it was during the war, no service was held then because the sub was "presumed lost" and not declared sunk until 1946. His youngest sister was 8 at the time and came to the service yesterday with lots of family. His niece read a letter to his mother sent three weeks before he was sunk near Iwo Jima.
She was the first sub to sink an enemy ship after Pearl Harbor. His name was Motor Machinist Mate 2nd Class Harold Waters, US Navy.

This is a partial list of the young men from my home town that were killed in WW2. These guys were my heros when I was growing up.
The first name highlighted is my uncle. He was 22.
The second is a neighbor just two houses away. He and my uncle went to high school together.

In those days familys displayed gold star flags in their front windows to show they had lost a son in the war. In addition to these two, another two flags were in the same block.

Respect.

True that.

It's not a holiday or day off.
It's a time to reflect & respect.

I'd like to propose that when a Politician votes for or supports a military
action, THEY are on the front lines.

God Bless those who have sacrificed so much.
