I like climbing as much as the next guy, but those climbs are wicked steep! I'll stick to marin county and the peninsula. I've done some riding in the east bay, but it's just too much hassle with traffic and such...there are so many good options on this side of the bay!

I have that ride saved to my Garmin but still have yet to work up the nerve to try it. Just looking at Marin gives me the willies, and I'm a climber. The riding out here is (imho) the best in the bay area, and I say that as someone who has lived in Marin, SF, and Oakland.

I have either gone up or down most of those hills. the climbs I like the most are out in mountains when touring. The no name passes. Look on the map and no name is given or elevation but you know you been gaining elevation for the past hour or tow Than you pass a sign very small at the top , elev. 7500 were did that come from

Before I opened this thread I thought of
Myself as a good climber, now I think I'm a POS.
I'm going spelunking or curling now, thanks.

http://http://inl.org/bicycle/deathride.html. Which is a bit less crazy, but still crazy. I like to suffer on climbs as much as the next guy/gal, but the last time I rode up Marin, I decided that I wasn't interested in doing it again... Especially the last block!

I keep myself entertained while riding by doing iphone photography. I'm also a mechanic at a small pro shop out here, and take pictures of stuff that comes through or projects I work on.

Very cool. I just tried to construct a similar ride here in my local riding area of NH/VT using ridewithgps.com, but could only get about 7,500 ft of climbing in 50 miles. Biggest challenge is finding the right balance between steepness and climbs near each other. There's plenty of climbs, but most in the 500-1500 foot range at 4-8% around here. So it's not easy to get to enough unique climbs with enough altitude within 50 miles.

In 60 miles, I bet you could find a route to work. But doesn't rhyme.

Hey that's an awesome shop (I used to live in Oakland)! You guys set up a commuter for me, and I demoed a Moots CR there a while back. September, I think. I think it was Jonathan and Adam that set me up.

Onetwentyeight is Adam,
and Jonathan is the manager.
Great shop, great people,

My home, I live right at the top of Marin and a bit over to Wildcat Canyon Rd. So I get to ride either Centennial or Euclid to Marin and up Marin to Grizzly Peak every night going back home from work. However, these climbs are OK compared to this bad boy where you climb 9000ft in less than 10mi if you do it twice.

Average: 17.6 %

Length: 7.5 km

Height start: 198 m

Height top: 1515 m

Gradient: 1317 m

I'm envious of those photos taken with iPhone, my last phone was a sony ericsson 8 meg,I wanted a decent camera that could double as a phone.
but the pics taken by your iPhone are fantastic.

Climbing in the Bay Area is fantastic also though I'm not interested in the climbs in the link I posted above, there are enough heart thumping short climbs here in the city if that is my preference without having to go to the east bay to find them. I prefer climbs like those found in Woodside or Marin/Mt Tam where one can stop for a snack, smell the roses, maybe take some pics and enjoy the great views offered at end of the road.
But for those wanting a heart stopping short climbs try these...
The Steepest Streets in San Francisco.
1. (tie) Filbert between Leavenworth and Hyde (31.5% grade)
1. (tie) 22nd between Church and Vicksburg (31.5% grade)
3. Jones between Union and Filbert (29% grade)
4. Duboce between Buena Vista and Alpine (27.9% grade)
5. Jones between Green and Union (26% grade)
6. Webster between Vallejo and Broadway (26% grade)
7. Duboce between Alpine and Divisadero (25% grade)
8. Jones between Pine and California (24.8 grade)
9. Fillmore between Vallejo and Broadway (24% grade)

When I lived in Atl. I thought going north to this ride was tough;

I think this would be as tough, maybe tougher. :help:

Glad I live where I can ride 200 miles with 200 feet of climbing! :p

That is pretty impressive riding, just to finish something like that.

Anything above 25 percent is insane. How do they even keep their front wheels down?:help:

I took part in the Nifty 10-50 in 2011 but skipped this years. There really needed to be an A, B and C group of riders. Due to different riders abilities there was a lot of waiting on tops of climbs which is tough on the muscles. I had the route in my Garmin 500 but there are just too many turns and the gps had a tough time trying to stay 'on course'. Marin ave is tough but it's early in the ride. I had a 52/39/30 11-28 setup that day.

Broadway street in San Francisco is 38% on the sidewalk. I've gotten up it in 34x26, 600 watts for 4mph.

And I thought the Tour das Hugel was a beast. It has 1 mile climbs at 15 - 20%.
