It's actually really short, what you see in that pic on the article is basically the whole hill. ~30 seconds iirc. As long as you don't slip on the cobblestones and have proper gearing, it's not horrible. Some riders are on 39x28 and make it up fine.
There's a lot more horrible hills out here.
Here's the 13 most horrible hills in Pittsburgh (Canton is 9th in this event iirc).

A little under 500 feet at 37% grade...as others have indicated, there are tougher hills in town, but Canton Avenue is no walk in the park. The Belgium block paving doesn't help either.
