In a never ending quest for the ultimate set-up, i'm now thinking i need an additional set of wheels for my new CF bike, alloy clinchers to save some abuse on the carbon wheels. IMO carbon section wheels look so right on a modern CF bike, what alu clinchers also fit the bill. since these will be the beat-up wheels, budget will be modest for these.

thoughts??

CXP-33, Velocity Fusion or Deep V, DT 585 or what they should be, Velocity ProElites-tubulars cuz ya know, clinchers are for.....well ya know.

Handbuilt to an appropriate hubset, built well.

Here is my Parlee with Stan's Alpha 340 rims, Alchemy hubs and Sapim CX-Ray spokes (except on the DS which are Wheelsmith) and red alloy nipples. Built by our forumite, Eric Ergott, and came in at exactly 1310 grams (built for me at 175 lbs but easy on equipment).

Don't you own a set of clinchers you can swap from another bike?

Sorry, I missed the "budget" bit. What about some Velocity A23s built with Shimano/Campy hubs? Probably get under $500 for those.

I have a set of HED Bastognes (Campy, low mileage) and Ultegra 6700 wheels (new) that I need to sell. If you want to really keep the price low, I also have an almost new set of Mavic Askium Race (shimano). PM me if you're interested.

I got my set of Flashpoints on here for $525 from guylimey on here. I've put about 2-3k miles of potholes and been through two pretty serious crashes, and they continue to tick. :)

I took the stickers off.

just curious, those wheels are alloy? are they heavy?

They're alloy brake surface/clincher hook, the spoke nipples are threaded into the carbon though. They aren't light (1800g or so), you'd have to get the Zipps for that (same shape and construction, different/cheaper carbon for cost savings).

I think the aluminum brake surface is a good compromise for the hilly descents I have around here. A little extra weight, but (a) it won't debead a tire and kill me when I overheat the brake surface, and (b) I can use them in the wet and achieve acceptable braking.

understood, know all about descending on carbons where heavy braking is required. they're a good looking wheelset nonetheless.

DT Swiss RR1.1 rims, 240s hubs, and SuperComp spokes, 28h 2x, handbuilt by Joe Young ...on a 2005 Cannondale Synapse Carbon 2.

...and before anyone says anything, there's actually about 3cm saddle-to-bar drop on this bike, it's just a weird angle on the picture!

With the graphics on your new Argon-18 and Chorus build, these fit the ultimate set-up in ultra dark label--BUT NOT the budget, at least new:

I use Ksyrium ES's, and they look nice. The black rims and spokes match nicely with my black and white frame.

These are Kinlin NB-R's laced to black White Industry hubs, Sapim X-Rays.

They're quite light. I'm only 150 in season, so they've been durable, even in pothole country.

The 'old' Look 481SL still rides well.

Doesn't surprise me. Those 'old' Looks rode as well as any bikes I've ever ridden. I had a 381 and the ride quality was awesome. Smooth and comfortable.

If you're doing a cheap-as-possible build, you might as well jump on the wide rim bandwagon and get some of those new rims @ bikehubstore.com.

Might I suggest a pair of used DA7800. I bought these used from my friend, who put on around 3000 or so everywhere miles on them. Now I'm doing the same...1000 miles in and I love them. Hubs roll smooth, silent, not a boat anchor, etc etc.

I really love these.

That right there is pretty much the only Carbon bike I would ever own.

Oh, and 150 pounds???? My shoes weigh more than that.

Jesus... you C-50 boys just don't mess around. I'm guessing there's a little OCD in that set up right there. Fess up, you used a laser level for the saddle, stem, and drops??

LOL, there's gonna be somebody out there that thinks this bike is set up like this only for the look. If I used a laser level, which I did not, I'd fess that up to you blokes. If there is any crowd I would not be embarrassed to admit something like that to, it'd be this one.
