My oldest son has been into bikes since he was very young. In fact, our first home was a small Cape Cod filled with bikes so it was natural that "bike" was his first word. Since then, we ride, hang out a bit at local bike shops, go to some races, and watch the Spring Classics when we have some time. And although I never push my kids to do anything they don't want to do, if there is an interest, I support them fully. :)

He has been asking me for a year to start racing at our local velodrome. Age 9 is the cut-off, so with a birthday in late January, this season he was finally eligible and he loves it! It was awesome to see him on the first day get on the track and take off, feeling a fixed bike under him for the first time and, after a few laps, grabbing the wall. In no time, he was riding hard and putting in some really impressive efforts before popping, recovering quickly (kids recover fast!) and doing it all over again. But most of all, he is making friends with other kids that love bikes and having a great time.

I have to say, the kids and parents in his racing league are great. Everyone is very supportive and encouraging. The first few weeks one young girl was having a hard time getting used to the bike and track, and fell several times. After some one-on-one time with a coach learning and gaining confidence on the infield, she made her first lap with parents clapping and cheering her on. I always hear some kids cheering for my son, who is one of the smallest in the league.

He may not become the next great track star, but I really don't care. He is riding more than me right now, and I love it. A proud Dad, for sure!

Congrats. The first time I took my son mountain biking, he followed me around for a loop, than he led the second loop and I couldn't keep up with him. i was so proud I nearly puked!

Glad to see! Enjoy it! I'm in the same boat as you, I wont be pushing my kids to do anything, but will support whatever they do (and i hope they want to bike!).

Very cool...the kind of moments that build REAL memories, for the both of you!

BTW...What's his height and what kind of bike did you set him up on?

I'm trying to get my kids into biking so I have an excuse to ride more!

Cool machine he's setup on - is that a rental or his own? Looks like a Havnoonian? SWEET!

Congratulations!

Tuck those shoelaces in, you don't want them caught in a fixed-gear drivetrain.

Great story. Where did you find a track bike for a 9-year old?

That is pretty awesome!!! Cycling is so great, so many different types and styles. I wish my dad had gotten me into it earlier... great that he found a passion so early in his life.

I didn't get my first set of clipless pedals until around age 20. I'm guessing he'll have a pair well before that!

Hey, thanks for all the kind words!

Buldogge- My son is about 50" tall, and was initially on a 20" wheel frame as he was right on the cusp of of riding a 24" wheel. Has to be the smallest track frame in the world! As of last week, he is on a 24" wheel frame and is doing great. I don't know what size top tube he is riding.

Good eye, BigFlax, but not surprising coming from you. :) Indeed, it is a Havnoonian. The velo has a whole fleet of Havnoonian and Fuji frames for the kids to ride, no charge. It is awesome. Some of the kids have their own bikes, including one lucky kid on a Maroon Spectrum with a chrome fork. Operalover, I hear small track frames are hard to come by, but some parents are buying some cheap carbon on-line.

Thanks, Fiamme Red. I do double knot those bad boys, but looks like they could be shortened. He is getting a pair of cycling shoes on Thursday so we will be able to toss the Air Jordans...
