I had a chance to tour the Moots factory in Steamboat Springs, CO... What a great experience and a great bunch of people. If you're ever in the area they offer tours every week.

is it common to use non-butted titanium? there's that shot of long titanium tubes to be cut to what appears to be multiple tubes

Very cool photos. I am currently 3 weeks into my 6-7 week build time for my Vamoots. Absolutely can't wait!
Love that there are dogs free roaming the shop.

Straight gauge titanium is the norm. Anyone using butted Ti typically "butts" it in house on a Bader sander; removing material from the center of the tube, leaving more on the ends. http://www.stephenbader.com/

I think Moots also uses some Reynolds butted Ti, that is butted in a more traditional manner, over mandrels.

Cheers,
KP

oh o.k. I'll have to look for the external stuff next time I see one in person.

Nice set of photos. Moots has their act together when it comes to making Titanium bikes. First class operation and a first class bike.

Hey, what was that bin of "rocks" for?

Hey, what was that bin of "rocks" for?

If I remember correctly that basically cleans/polishes the TI, I think all their stems go in there and all the cut tubes for the frames.

Before I went there I didn't have a desire for a Moots frame, but after seeing how much time and finesse goes into their frames I'd love to own one at some point.

Now I just have to visit the Seven factory to see how they do things :)

Hey, what was that bin of "rocks" for?

That's a tumbler, typically used to deburr parts. It will also 'burnish' them, creating a uniform finish.

Pretty interesting that they put whole frame tubes in there!

Whenever I hear "moots" i always think of the Seinfeld bubble boy episode,
where George and Susan are playing Trivial Pursuit, with the guy,
and George says "I'm sorry, the correct answer is moops".

Moots uses thin walled, non butted tubes for their Vamoots and CR. 'Some' welders need butted tubes because of weld skill(thicker at weld joint) but thin walled ti tubes are OK at Moots. Gotta remember, the primary reason to 'but' ti tubes is to make them lighter, like the RSL.

Awesome pics. What a great post.

I never realized that Moots were built in a "plant." Very nice setup.

Love that Fatbike - One day I'll have a Moots!

I see. So there's not much difference in feel between a ti bike that is butted to one that is not? I have always been told that butted steel makes riding better and am wondering now if that doesn't translate to all materials.

Such amazing frames. My two regrets in life are selling my Ritchey road logic, and my Mooots Vamoots. WHY??????

Very nice. You are a lucky guy to be able to enjoy titanium heaven. Did you borrow one of their bikes for a local ride?

When you're in Steamboat, go to Orange Peel Bicycle Service and Kent Eriksen's shop next door. Both are also great to visit.

thanks for the pics. I'm think I'm the +4 on the I love my moots train but ah well. Gotta be something special in that rocky mountain air for both KE and moots to make such wonderful bikes.
