Apparently that is how Roman Kreuziger knows he's at the weight he wants to be at for competition...

yikes.

Ironically, being a professional athlete isn't all that healthy in many instances.

Pretty much how my long ago Belgian teammates knew they were at their racing weight.

He's got nothing on me. I can see the veins on my wrist and the back of my hand...

There's veins on my stomach?! Even at 155# I never saw veins on my stomach!

Guess I never hit 'racing weight!'

Yuck. Back in my wrestling days, it was common practice at the weigh-in to look for a "dimple" on the side of your opponent's butt, where the quad, glut, and hamstrings converged. Legend (this was high school, can't vouch for the accuracy) had it that was the last place on the body that held fat, and if the dimple was there, the guy was "sucked down" as low as he could go in weight... He would either be awesome or so delirious due weight loss and dehydration that you'd crush him.

Looks like I still have some work to do. Maybe if I rollback some of the wrinkles in my stomach, I'll find the veins.

I prefer Tyler Hamilton's 'see my ribs' approach..

He's still fat compared to Wiggins. ;)

If I ever get thin enough I'll have to shave my stomach and check.

In my college rowing days I got a bit obsessed with body fat % and weight. Being a natural 165-170 lbs and 6'3" meant I was too heavy to row lightweight but much too light on muscle to being an effective heavyweight. I got down as low as 155 over winter and actually think vascularity decreased. I felt terrible forcing that weight limit on myself. Conversely when I was in a marathon and ultra-running phase I naturally hung between 160-163 and felt great. I ate non-stop and apparently looked terminally ill, but energy levels were high.

I always wonder just how nuts the pros from World Tour riders through low level crit monkeys get about weight. I'm sure some do more than others, but it would be interesting to know.

Don't many of those guys weigh everything thing they eat to control the calorie intake? That's sort of nuts. And looking at pictures of guys like the Chicken with their jersey off, the results are definitely nuts.

yup - practice and then go home to dinner (which amounted to sucking on an ice cub, and on a good nite a slice of an orange). You do make weight this way, but it was not very safe.

But one helluva tan.

Ha...

But in all seriousness doesn't the law of diminishing returns show up at some point?
