Lots of threads re: mr. squirrel, but didn't see anything about the bunnies.

Ride this morning at sunrise, must have seen dozens of rabbits. They're not quite as unpredictable as the squirrel, but close.

Question, were I to hit one, would I go down? Or do I just ignore them?

I think it'd be even worse than hitting a squirrel. They're bigger.

My bet is that you will go down if you make contact with Peter Cottontail. I had one literally run between my wheels and miss the crank while on a fast descent a few years back. My friend who was behind me screamed when he saw Fluffy miss taking me down, and he brings that story up every time we are on that route, which just happened to be last Sunday. He has even nicknamed that stretch of the descent "Rabbit Run".

They're like train tracks... it all depends on the angle and how fast you're going.

I'd put the odds of going down at 80%, but I think if you were going fast enough, and hit it straight on, you might just slice through...

If you kill Mr Bunny at least you could eat him for dinner

My opinion, too.

We don't mock the rabbit because of this:

The Tao of Pooh and Te of Piglet were good reads.

Perhaps mr. squirrel can help write a sequel to a most excellent read:

Little do we know the lab mice and dolphins have it all figured out:

PS: Ancient proverbs and modern perceptions tell us the rabbit is too smart, sharp and cunning to run through your spokes. I mean NO offense to squirrels or mr. and mrs. squirrel.

Bunnies are the most foul, cruel, and bad-tempered rodents you ever set eyes on...

If you do smack one, don't keep its foot.

It won't have been that lucky.

I've had a few close calls with turkeys on descents in New England. Now those are big animals and a collision would certainly fowl up the rest of my ride.

Oh man, oh man.

Bunnies are not rodents: Rabbits are small mammals in the family Leporidae of the order Lagomorpha.

Squirrels on the other hand: Squirrels belong to a large family of small or medium-sized rodents called the Sciuridae.

Dave, that's good science there, but you do realize your Golden Retriever is the smartest thing in your household? He/she owns every couch, your bed, gets one square meal a day, endless snacks, tv shows, four seasons of Battlestar Galactica in HD, wifi and he/she gets to look out from your kitchen window and LOL at the rabbits and squirrels.

This was greenway and NPS roads, 75% of the bunnies did just stay on one side, but the others would try to make it across. Only after they couldn't make up their mind about running parallel to the road or doing a 180 back into the weeds.

Guess I'll continue to watch them, leery that they could indeed take me down.

But, that sure beats having to worry about cars.

Two squares a day.

And as we've discovered: At least they're not Cylons.

A few years back, my commute took me along a gravel tow path along a canal (Indianapolis). It's home to lots of ducks. Mallards to be specific. That particular evening, I frightened a duck and it darted directly into my path. I had time to react and braced myself for the boulder sized impact. I ran dead-on center, right over it's back. I'd thought I was going to tossed from my bike, but to my surprise, I never felt it.

I circled back and by then it had hobbled over (with it's mate) and re-entered the safety of the canal. As a pair, they were swimming circles in the water as the former was in the final moments of life. I felt sorry for harming the nature I enjoyed each day on my commute. I decided euthanasia was in order so rode home to fetch my .22 rifle and end it's suffering. My GF was more sensible than I, and explained the folly of discharging weapons in an urban environment to spare a duck, as mortally wounded as it was.

Point of the story? I'm not afraid of squirrels, rabbits or ducks anymore. Turkey, maybe.

I hit a baby skunk a few years ago. It scampered in front of me during a night ride & unexpectedly doubled back. I felt it's spine break under my wheel & death instantaneous. Surprisingly I was not thrown from my bike, it was a clean kill, & there was no smell. Poor dumb little animal.

God this situation freaks me out. If I had a nickel for every time a raccoon almost took out my front wheel in Prospect Park, Brooklyn, I'd almost have fifty cents! Coons, Brooklyn, who knew?

The worst was about 85% into this hilly century route in Arizona, we'd have to cut through the Indian reservation in Scottsdale and we'd have to predictably out-of-the-saddle sprint away from the fearless and countless stray dogs. They'd literally run themselves right into your wheels if did have the legs to out sprint them.

New Jersey. One time I rode there and one of these things walked across the rode and nearly fell into my spokes, thank God everyone was okay:
