View Full Version : Do wide rims *need* wide rim tape?

The asterisks are up there because while I'm sure it would be preferable to have wide rim tape in 23 mm rims, I want to know if it's necessary. Thanks in advance for your thoughts.

hope not. i used regular zipp plastic rim strip on my velocity a23's. covered the spoke holes just fine without slipping around, or so i could see. it's snug enough that once seated, it doesn't move.

Are we talking tubular tape or rim strips?

Any rim strip that covers the spoke holes will do.

From experience, 23mm wide tubulars could definitely use wider tape than generally available. That base tape peels up from those sidewalls in a jiffy...

Sorry, yes, I'm talking about clinchers. I'm too much of a Nancy-boy for tubulars.

I'm using 17mm wide Velox on my Hed Belgiums. So far, so good. Had I been patient, I would have gotten this: http://www.wheelbuilder.com/store/hed-c2-rim-tape.html

I don't think there would be problems, but I put wider tape on my Hed Belgium's just to be safe. I worry.

I worry.

Me too. About almost everything. I blame my grandmother. This has been a good session, don't you think?

I use the HED C2 specific rim tape.

Similar to the Zipp stuff but wider.

Rim tapes is so cheap even I wouldn't fail to buy the correct width.

Normally I'd say go with the wider tape, but think of the extra weight. _Rotating_ weight no less.

Yes, I'm kidding.

I've had issues with the narrow plastic rim bands (Ritchey, specifically) moving around on wider rims and causing gaps/flats.

With tape (like Velox) it's less of an issue as long as the holes are covered, but I recommend and use the wider (17mm) version on 23mm rims with zero issues.

With tape (like Velox)

I too like cloth tapes like Velox, but the only problem with them is that they do get old and will eventually fail (at the spoke hole, which results in a blowout and a flat, which has happened to me at least once).

Moral of the story: After a few years be sure to replace the cloth tape.

I've had good luck using Velocity's "velo plugs" on thier A32 rims. They make getting the tires on and off easier too.

I've switched to Schwalbe blue synthetic cloth tape...I run the 15mm on all different rims, including (3) sets of A23s.

I'll second the use of VeloPlugs. I use them on my Velocity A23 and Hed C2 rims. Extremely tire/tube friendly.

Do you use red or yellow for the A23s? Thanks.

Same question: red or yellow plugs for the A23s? Anyone?

Use the red plugs. That's what I'm using on my A23s and they fit nice and snug.

I was hurting my thumbs trying to get some in, so I would not recommend yellow.

Thanks, gents.

Sadly, the red plugs don't cover the emotional hole of a latchkey childhood.
