Question: anyone actually know a Serotta riding dentist? [discuss]

This in reference to a particular stereotype?

of course, pathetic and trivial as it is. :)

A lawyer I know owns three Serotta.:banana::banana: that's 3 bananas for him (one in carbon).

That's a damn lie!

(One belongs to my partner.)

Toosahn- you need to read bikesnobnyc to be in on the dentist joke.

Yes, Yes I do...

But I suspect the bikesnot witnessed a lawyer or an electrical engineer, dentists are just more politically correct targets.

I have a dentist acquaintance who cycles. He buys used bikes, but no Serotta.

It's a myth.

I have a dentist friend who keeps buying old school steel
frames like Colnago and Lemond.
He can't decide what he wants. Every time he gets a new "perfect" frame
I install his bottom brackets and headsets, he fills my cavities.

When he brings his latest one over, I lay out my tools on a clean paper towel
just like a dentist's office.
I tell him it won't hurt a bit as I carefully line up the headset cups. When I'm
done I tell him to stay away from hard candy and dirt roads for a few days.

I hope he never gets a Serotta because if he stops chasing the dragon,
I'll have to start paying for dental!

I know one dentist and one lawyer who both ride a lot. Both work very hard and are very good at what they do.
Both own very expensive, multiple bikes. One is a very strong masters racer, the other does it for fitness, often riding at 5AM, then working a 10-12 hour day.
Props to both of them.

I suspect that's right but I never quite got it. I'm not a dentist, or an expert on popular images of the various health care professions, or anything like that. But somehow I missed the message about the dentist stereotype. So how does it work? I mean, obviously dentists are not professional athletes, but are they supposed to stand out, amongst folks with actual professional jobs that aren't regulated by UCI, as non-athletic/poser/consumerists or something? My dentist isn't a cyclist, but she's cool. I dunno. I like her.

On our regular Sunday morning ride during the "Great Australian Banana Crisis" of 2011, a friend observed that the guy whose wheel we were sucking had a banana in his rear pocket.
We enquired into the nature of his employment.
He was a dentist.

Hm. My dentist doesn't ride a Serotta - but he does have a flavor for lugged steel and Record 9s groups. Actually... I think hes a forumite.

I have a good buddy who's an orthodontist. He and his wife ride Legend Ti's. They've had them for at least 10 years. They ride a lot and have gotten huge value out of those bikes. I don't think they're extravagant at all. They know good value and quality and get their money's worth out of their gear.

My dentist rides a Madone, that's why I never get my teeth cleaned,
I don't want to see him on a Serotta or Parlee as a result of my money

My best friend is a dentist who rides a Serotta. Not the stereotype, though - he owns only the one bike, and rides it whenever he can. Definitely not just a garage ornament.

Just to complete the stereotypes, though - I'm a lawyer. I don't own a Serotta, but a lovely custom steel Kirk Terraplane with Campy Record 10. But sorry to the stereotype lovers - I've had it for 8 years now, it's the only bike I own and I ride the snot out of it. LBS owner went so far as to suggest I might ride a bit less, so I have time to clean it a bit more....

No garage ornaments here....

I think Bike Snob's snarky dentist comments were a serious problem for the Serotta image. I sometimes wonder whether IF paid him to do it (just a joke).

There's a difference between a word of mouth joke and a widely disseminated categorization on the web.

I know one that rides a Merlin.

Being a dentist gives you some flexibility, in terms of how much you work... certainly would make getting in rides easier.

2 out of 3 dentists recommend to former heads of structured financial products entities within global insurance firms that require an $85B+ bailout to ride an Ottrott.

It's a joke, maybe a bad joke but a joke about a stereotype of someone with lots of disposable income buying a bike beyond their abilities but easily within their financial means. It's not really a dig at dentists as much as it is with the idea (true or false) that they make too much money. Like most jokes of this type it's mostlly untrue if not totally fictional. First time I heard this I got it, I am sure that you really had this figured out too.I suspect that's right but I never quite got it. One of my best friends is a dentist in Manhattan. (wifey also) so lots of disposable income. He rides a Giant Defy all Shimano Sora components and she rides a Toyota Yaris. They could easily more than one Serotta/Moots/Pego you name it.

I think you're only partly right. It is a mix of disposable income with a stereotype of dentists being dull and meek and a bit dweeby. In addition to the examples from pop culture I listed earlier, I'll also add the derision that Billy Crystal's character heaps on the fiance of his ex-wife in "Running Scared." Someone else, in this thread or other, referenced the Seinfeld "Anti-Dentite" episode, where the same stereotypes are paraded.

So you don't want to see someone in a skilled profession profit and enjoy nice things? Seems a bit selfish and the only thing that will suffer is your dental hygiene!
