In reading through various threads the past few weeks/months I think folks here need to renew/reinvigorate/re-establish/acquire a sense of humor. Just sayin'.

Tone is really hard to read on a computer screen which I think contributes to the problem..... but yes, I agree... let's keep things light.

...and if you're feeling cranky? ride your bike. ranting on the internet isn't going to solve anything..

cheers!

I agree with Dave's post. As i just mentioned to another forumite, i've got the flu and have been puking and various other unpleasant stuff. I think what i really need is a bike ride or other sweat therapy, but it isnt in the cards at the moment. cheers to all.

Gotta use the appropriate emoticon. Bananas work well

I do need a sense of humor today, it's 75 degrees, damn near perfect in every way and I'm inside my Scamp trailer doing some modifications.:crap:

A big +1 for him!

It's a well-known fact among mods that we have annual problems with "cabin fever" usually in February-March. There's a definite change in tone when the weather improves enough that the majority can get out and ride.

I'm also +1 that use of emoticons can help a lot to add some emotional context to comments. Most of human communication is NOT verbal but is based on body language, tone, facial expression, etc. Emoticons provide that no matter how much some make fun of them.

But there's also a trick to remembering that the person on the receiving end of the comment you think is clever may be in entirely difference circumstances than you and may have very good reason not so see the humor in your post. They may have really good reasons not to "lighten up"--or not. And yes, I've been guilty of it myself at times.

How's about we all go out for a ride?

The other side of this coin is that every post doesn't need to be full of emoticons and obsequious language to not be considered rude. If someone posts some facts, disagrees about some procedure or asks a straight question, it is probably jumping the gun to assume their post is infringing.

I think that's half the problem, right there. Let's all stop looking to be offended all the time, please?

There's been alot of tension, bickering, and even a bit of hostility around here lately. It's probably why April has alot of suicide/depression, many are emerging from winter blues? Spring will be here soon, then summer. Maybe folks can take a vacation from the computer and go out and enjoy some bike rides. This is a great place, but definitely there's nothing here to lose sleep over or get worked up about.

I for one take exception to the idea that this forum should treat our sport with levity. The thought that we should find humor in the escapades of a bunch of old f_rts careening around the back roads of America (& other parts of the world) is offensive to say the least. Hmmmm.... which icon shall I use?

So a cyclist walks into a bar...

Wait a minute,

A Priest, a Rabbi and a cyclist are together...

That's not it,

How many cyclists does it take....

Nope, still not right,

Take my cyclist, PLEASE!

The flip side to the "lighten up" sentiment is that a forum full of lighthearted commentary is sort of boring and useless. Personally I enjoy the heated debates on here more than the threads full of joke pictures and dancing bananas. I have my own outlets for goofiness, which include lots of beer and joking around with friends, but I come here for the more meaningful debates and discussions about bike related and non-bike related topics. And if they get a little heated, so be it. I think that's a fair price to pay for a forum full of interesting discussions between intelligent and passionate people.

I actually miss many of our more colorful, cantankerous, and sadly, departed members.
