I was told by Jesse at IF this when I inquired about my 97 planet X.

"Also, regarding seat post size, you most likely need a 26.8mm seat post, though all newer Planet X frames take a 27.2mm post."

I think that would likely apply to your frame as well.

Unfortunately a 26.8 is also too big for my frame but I need to do some more inspection as it's possible I need to get my seat tube honed.

My 98 Planet X (1" threadless steerer) takes a 26.8 ... I'd bet a beer that's what the OP needs.

All IF bikes made before 2000 used either a 26.8mm or a 29.4mm seat post. The 29.4mm posts were used in mountain frames, the 26.8mm in most everything else.

Thomson makes the 29.4...Joe got those for me all of the time.

The 26.8 is really limited in options now a days. Nothing crazy high end if I remember correctly.

They had a good reason, if you care to listen to it...

There were plenty of Reynolds 853 bikes out there, most took 27.2 posts. The Lemond Zurich for example, which was on our sales floor right next to the IF as a demonatration of what you get with a smaller scale production bike. The Lemond had the same tubeset, but after welding the heated zone would harden, so it was really destructive on cutting tools to ream the tube to a round 27.2. There's always going to be weld penitration and heat deformation, so seat posts didn't always fit so well. IF wanted better, so the silver soldered in a piece of softer steel, then reamed it out to 26.8. The result is an accurate and round seat post ID, just not the one you would like...

I assume Thomson is close enough to crazy high end.... 26.8 is one of their standard sizes.

When I was in this boat (97 CJ) I used a black Thomson and dug up a nice silver Dura Ace in 26.8 here on the forums to match better, they are around. Record, Dura Ace and Thomson in silver and black are available on ebay now.
