Since we have a pretty active classifieds community, I want to get an idea of how much shipping a frame and complete bike cost for people. It has definitely gone up since a few years back. I live dead center USA. I use FedEx with an account (13% discount). I shipped a frame and fork to FL for $40 in a small bike box. I shipped a complete mtn bike insured (37 lbs well packed) to NC for $120. Is this in the ball park of what others are paying? If not, what am I doing wrong?

Seems about right. The cost increases greatly with a higher declared value.

It's only $0.75 per $100

price looks about right... some shipping boxes are bigger than others. the cheapest i have found is fed ex home delivery.

Yep, that's what I use, FedEx home delivery with direct signature.

Seems about right too. There's both weight (for heavier bikes) and dimensional weight (for bigger boxes). I've actually thought about shipping the frame with cranks separately from the wheels and other stuff to see if I could get a lower total cost than a single heavier package.

Agree w/FedEx home delivery as one of the cheaper options.

I used Fedex for bikes. $80 to $100 seems to be fair. UPS's prices are never far off though.

I had a complete bike shipped to me for $45 a year ago but the shipper had a corporate account with discounts.

I shipped a road bike in a standard size bike box from Dallas to Philadelphia by FedEx ground for $80. I took the box to the FedEx depot.

THere is a big penalty for oversize. So for a full bike I think it is cheaper to ship the frame/fork in a smaller frame box that is not OS and the remaining parts separately.

I have recently shipped out two bikes UPS. I used standard road bike boxes that a Trek would com in. 54x27x8. Both bikes were insured to around 1400 and cost $88. It is all in the box sizing. Take off the cranks and remove the bars to get the 8" width, that os the key. Also, do not go over 60" Length. Actual weight was around 27 lbs.

Use USPS parcel post in the continental US. it will be cheaper than FEDEX. it will take 10 days to deliver.

Your results may vary, but I've always had good luck (and saved a good bit of $$$) shipping through my LBS on their account. Accompany your request to ship a bike with a six pack of fine brew and you'll both come out ahead.

True. I've done like this. According to USPS, once the box measures more than 108 total girth, there is a BIG penalty. Last week it costed me (USPS) $ 29 to send a F/F 12 pounds from coast to coast (RI to Seattle) Putting the wheels in a diff. box and spreading the components between both boxes, I think 60-70 ballpark estimate.

I've shipped bikes to both coasts from North Texas for under $100 insured. Now that I work at a bike shop it's even less....:)

I just sent a frameset today from CA to ND. $50 for fedex ground for a 10lb 34x31x7 box. Valued at $600, which apparently contributes substantially to the cost.

It would have been $58 without a Fedex account.

USPS wanted like $105. I couldn't believe it.
