Maybe the seat tube-seatstay joint separates? Looks like it could.

A friend brought one back from Japan like that. They've had bikes like these since the '80s, at least.

good question, but I gotta wonder if you'd ever have to buy a new belt? It's not like you're going to be riding this thousands of miles a year...
