Not very Springlike today in NY, but I made burgers last night and grilled them today. Cheddar cheese, sauteed onions, ketchup and kaiser roll. A complete meal. :) Haven't used charcoal in nearly a decade. The gas grill was dying again so I rolled it to the curb and went back to oldschool. Webber is too low to the ground, my only complaint, so I lifted her up with old Brembo rotors and red bricks.

Does it count if you cook on the grill outside but eat inside?

Also, does it count if you live in a place that's warm enough for year-round grilling?

I do all year, heck we barely had a winter. 'The Season' is Spring. Somehow these Spring/Summer grill/bbq sessions have just a little bit more magic than Fall/Winter.

I live in Minnesota, and it isn't at all uncommon for my neighbors to see me in the backyard flipping burgers in sub-freezing temps with snow flying. We always keep a path cleared to the grill.

TonyT, those ceramic kilns are serious business. Big bucks, but very efficient.

rounder, I had a Baby Webber and gave it to my sister/brother-in-law for a Yankee game tailgate. They are season tix holders so I told them to keep it. Great, little, well made unit.

My Grill is now complete:

we did pork tenderloins on the Weber Kettle last night---wonderful as usual. I had a big ceramic egg years ago. It was great for roasting with minimum charcoal= yummy cornish game hens, etc. I could not get a good char on the outside of steaks while keeping the middle rare to medium rare. Gas grills are ok for fish and chicken. Weber Kettles are the best/most versatile grilling/smoking devices ATMO.

Webers work great. I have three in MI and two in AZ. No need to spend more for anything else.

Cowboy charcoal is scrap lumber. There a re better out there if you look around: http://www.nakedwhiz.com/lumpindexpage.htm?bag

I mix my hardwood charcoal with mesquite. It might not be the flavor everyone likes, but works for me.

I am +1 to what you said. I was shocked by the Cowboy Lump. Granted, I've been out of the loop for about ten years, I used to be a diehard charcoal-only dude so I was questioning my effort to get the Cowboy Lump fired up. No more. If I was cooking for family tonight, I would've been ranked on by friends who would've lol'd at the lack of heat and the amount of time it took to get hot. In the end it all worked out, but I am done with Cowboy.

I liked the notion of less chemicals in not going with briquettes, but I will take up your advice on coal.

Good call. I just bought a BGE.

Now I've got a Weber Summit gas, Weber performer (that's the large charcoal kettle mounted on a steel cart with a gas starter), a portable rectangular weber and the BGE....kinfa like bikes, you can never have enough variety.

This weekend my "Meat Night" buddies from Rhode Island came up bearing Picanha, some boar liver, fresh Chatham oysters and too much whisky.

The result was our first "Carpetbagger"--steak stuffed with oysters then grilled perfectly...delicious.

During their stay, we planned for pigroast 2, this august...we'll see if we can improve on last year!

I still have my original Weber after 32 years, used heavily with all original parts. I now primarily use it when I want to smoke something low and slow.

Helpful hint: for lighting a charcoal fire, I use a chimney device along with a dedicated hair dryer (once the coals catch, go at the chimney with the dryer) to get a hot fire fast.

I primaily 'que on a Broilmaster Gas grill that I've had for nearly 19 years (only replaced the stainless burner once about 3 years ago). The heavy cast aluminum body in combination with heavy grids makes for efficient and predictable results, year round, in any weather condition.

Yesterday, we enjoyed a rack of lamb that had been rubbed 24 hours earlier with Penzey's Turkish Spice mix. Done to medium-rare, the chops were simply succulent.

Cheers.

I really want one of these!! :(

But currently, we are using a Weber Performer. Went back to charcoal a couple years ago after many frustrating years of disintegrating gas grills, expensive/hard to find replacement parts, etc.
I don't love the cleanup of the spent charcoal, but I like the taste of the food, and I like that the only part I replaced after two years was to buy a new grill (old one had too much rust) and it only cost $30.

Large here is $899 USD, nest additional $189

Alternative way to acquire is to get demo from one of the "eggfest events" sometimes put on by local dealer, or go to one of the giant home shows and get a "show special".

since new owner, I gather it will work well for smoking but I wonder how good/convenient for simple grilling (versus what I already have). intend to keep my charcoal and gas for extra surface area when entertaining.

Have you tried grilling steak on it yet? I thought it was supposed to be quite good for that, since it can get so hot to sear the outside, them temp control to cook the inside?
Although I'm still a little unclear about how easy it is to get the temperature to drop once you get it really high?

Yes, eggcellent for steaks.
You get the temp to drop by closing the top and bottom vents

Take a look at BBQ devices in West Marine catalog/website. There are gas cookers of various sizes and shapes in stainless steel that clamp on rails. I'll bet they could be made to clamp on a fire escape too. Not quite as good as charcoal but better than your indoor griddle.

Can not be beat! I can slow cook ribs for 10 - 12 hours, then have enough heat left to bake a pan of brownies!

If you have Ace Hardware stores near you, wait for the Grill your Ace off competitions. They use BGE's, then sell them as "demos" for CHEAP! Usually 10% off the Egg, and the nest is thrown in, pretty good deal!

Boston Butt (pork shoulder)
Slow and Low (about 250° and takes me 20 hrs to get the internal temp to 195°, so it's an overnight smoke)

We are redoing our back yard and looking for a new grill. I wanted a Green Egg but lost the battle with my wife. Since she does 50% of the grilling she wanted something easy to start. do you use the wax cubes? if not, what? also, I understand the problem isn't getting it hot, but rather coolng it down to the temp you want to cook at if yo let the heat initally rise past that point. true or false?

I use the electric starter:

http://www.amazon.com/Big-Green-Egg-Electric-Starter/dp/B001E27YPM

Before the electric starter, I used cotton balls soaked in isopropyl rubbing alcohol.

I crank it wide open to sear steaks. If I want to cook low and slow, I start closing the vents before it gets above 200. You are correct, cooling it down is harder. The trick is to not let the egg get higher than your desired temp.

When the sun shines enough to officially become sunshine...it's indeed a new season where the BBQ glistens. When I can eat outside, it's BBQ Season.

Today temps dropped way down, it's 40* with massive winds and the grill just doesn't look the same tonight. I grilled with these last summer for seafood and enjoyed many stripped bass, shrimp, salmon and tuna steaks:

http://www.seabear.com/catalog/Product/Cooking%20Tools/123/Cedar+Grilling+Planks.aspx

Wet the cedar down, make soaking wet (trap one underwater in your sink for 15 minutes). Place on top tray of BBQ or indirect-side, place the seafood atop and cook. Yummy and easy cleaning.

Got a BGE and love it. It's the equivalent of a custom/handmade bike for BBQs. More expensive but damn worth it! The kids love making pizzas in it. In 30 minutes it can hit 700 and the pies are done in less than 5 minutes. On the other end of the spectrum we slow cook pork all day and the BGE keeps a low temp consistent all day. I use lump charcol and a bag lasts a very, very long time.

If you like BBQ'ing look into a BGE

Guy:

That pie looks awesome. I would have never thought about doing pizza on a grill.

I was just the lucky recepient of a new Weber Genesis. All stainless steel and built to last. I had a knock-off weber kettle style charcoal grill from my hardware store and it lasted 3 years before it rusted away. Love the charcoal flavor but not the time it takes to get it ready to go.

Been bbq'ing for the past week, steaks, chicken, roasted zuccini, red peppers, all great!

Temp control is easy after you get the hang of it.
The issue when compared to gas (as with any charcoal grill), is the prep time. With gas, turn a knob and cook in minutes, with charcoal you need a half-hour lead time (but worth it).

I've always used the wax cubes.

Another plus is that there is no need to clean out the coals from the last cook (unless it was 6 mo ago), just add some new lump, mix and light.

The real reason I got an Egg (Not mine, but a stock picture):

I too have the Weber in a cart w/gas lighter and it is so much more convenient than my former plain Weber kettles. The gas canister lighter+no more fluid, chimney, wax lighters, etc. The canister ash receiver is much easier and neater to use. It holds the ashes from a whole bag of charcoal so when I use the last of the charcoal I put the full canister in the charcoal bag and dump the ashes. No dirty grey stuff blowing around the patio like when I had the standard saucer ash catcher.

I have the first generation, bought it about 12 years ago as a father's day present "to myself" when my daughter turned one. the table is steel and uses a small propane canister. the newer one has a better desgn for charcoal storage and a smaller gas cylinder. once you have one of these, you;ll wonder why you ever delt with the standard kettle design with the open ash catcher.

I just got a deal on a medium BGE. Of course all the stores "recommend" getting the large, but I dont need/want the large capacity for a 20# turkey so will "make do" with the medium until I decide how the BGE fits into the set up with my performer and my summit. worse case i'll seel it on CL and then just buy a demo model large after it's used 1x at a local "egg-fest"

we were using charcoal exclusively until I finally capitulated and got gas just so we could have instant on and cool off and put away when we wanted to BBQ after work or when it was raining. thats why I have both...and now the BGE since I couldnt pass up the deal.

I love this grill, it really makes charcoal as easy as gas. I still use a Chimney, but I pulled out the grate that holds the charcoal. That way the charcoal touches the bottom grate right above the gas flame in the grill. When it is done I just lift the chimney straight up and the charcoal dumps out the bottom.

Viper, you should look into the Wicked Good Lump Charcoal. They will even ship it to your house if you can't find it locally.

You might check to see if there is any BBQ specialty stores that would carry it. It is carried locally at a fireplace and patio furniture store and at a few local BBQ supply shops.

Very good performing lump.

anyone know the origins of charcoal? henry ford was looking for a way to re-use the wood scraps left over from building wooden car wheels...initally branded "ford" and ultimately now run by his then partner...kingsford.

the older ones (mine) used a tank and not a cylinder/bottle for propane. that said, I only run the gas for 5-6 minutes or so and then shut it off to let the coals fire themselves. that saves gas else have a spare on premise...

It's true Ford started Kingsford brand briquettes but generic charcoal has been in use for hundreds of not thousands of years. Ford, Firestone and Edison were keen campers too. There are photos of them sitting together at their campsite.

Steaks grilling as of a few minutes ago..very wet but that doesn't damper a good Deschutes Brew...Mirror Pond Pale Ale FTW.

Have you guys checked out the Komodo Joe? A store local to me has them and they have some really nice features.

PS. I keep grill brochures and grilling cookbooks next to my bed. they fight for space with cycling magazines!

Those steaks look more baked than grilled to me. I want that charred crust of carcinogens and a red center.

Those had just finished :) I like them dark pink and I cool them slowly!

I use both Weber gas grills, and Weber kettles. Depending on what we're cooking and how much time I have to do it.

I have to confess to being really intrigued by these though ....

http://www.traegergrills.com/shop/grills/BBQ070

I was looking at these the other day. wood pellets, which in BC are knee deep, precise temperature control so you can crank the heat up to 700* if you want or you can drop it down to about 125*. A full hopper of pellets at 200* I am told will last almost 20 hours.

I'm thinking about doing this, at least trying it.

Well, looks like a tie between gas and charcoal in the poll.
(I voted for Charcoal)

I am surprised actually, to see so many charcoal users. In today's world we want our steak and WE WANT IT NOW!

For you gas fire users...

I have had a BGE for 10+ years and it is as good as the day I bought it - you can truly consider it a lifetime investment. We do a ton of work for all the Kingsford plants - it is amazing what goes into making briquettes. The two plants in KY average 300+Tons per day per plant.

It's almost a new season, so here's what's on the grill tonight at my place. I cook with real wood on old gas grills that other people have cast off. This one is really nice, I'm cooking with black cherry. Pork steaks first, the chicken breasts are on right now.

Mmmmm. Looks great.

I grill year round in any and all sorts of weather. When we lose power during a storm, it becomes the main cooking implement other than the microwave. I have a 1993 Ducane 1504 with the side burner. I am going to replace the burners, one valve, and the ceramic bricks over the holidays. This will be the first maintenance I have done to it since it was new, other than give it a coat of barbeque black every few years. Life is too short to mess with cheap gas grills.
