I noted with interest that in the video clips he only once raised his arms in victory. Is the raising of arms and other associated victory "salutes" a more recent phenomenon, or was Eddy not a gun slinger?

That's what makes him the greatest ever. Triple winner of the grand tours and some spring classics, and other smaller stage races in a single year. Not to mention becoming world champion and hour record holder. WOW! I can't see any current pro achieving anything close to that.
