View Full Version : What to do with a crashed frame

Had a collision with an SUV a few weeks ago. Driver thought she could speed past me (as I was sprinting) and make a speedy right turn. I ended up t-boning the car...brand-new bike (not even three hours old) didn't fare so well.

Now the question is what to do with the wrecked frame. Yard art? Something more destructive?

....you almost made it out...I would have thought it happened more in town. Glad to hear your just replacing a f/f. That could have gone a lot worse. Saw that you inquired about that Caad 9 on the classifieds. Good luck finding a replacement!

Trade it in under Cannondale's crash replacement program, assuming they still have it?

My broken Colnago is wall art. My broken Serotta will be getting repaired.

Depends on how attached you are to the bike.

Hope she buys you a new frame! It's the right thing to do.

And if crash replacement is not an option, I vote for wall art. Or garage art. Spray a few coats of primer on it and then make it some artsy fartsy thingy to hang.

now, how do i cut aluminum?

Dremel (sp?) tool (or similar with flex cable) or tin snips / shears. Kind of a hassle, but doable.

i think you might need a specific blade when cutting Al.

I cut my Gitane track that I've wrecked into small pieces for welding practice.

Well that's a bummer

As long as you're cutting it maybe you could salvage the rear triangle and mount it upside down to a 2x4 as a wheel holder or rudimentary truing stand.

A saws all can cut right through that. Used one to cut my FTP TSP.
Like a hot knife through butter.

A pipe cutter will give you the safest and square cut but they aren't cheap for larger tubes. A fine tooth blade hacksaw will work fine as well. A Sawzall is overkill and completely sketchy on anything not firmly clamped down. Just my two cents:)

Make the rear triangle into a shop stool.

If you go for some type of "industrial art" with your old frame just make sure that you are careful (eye protection, watch your fingers, etc) It would be silly to walk away from a crash like that and end up hurting yourself. ;)

For now save it as is in case you need it for legal reasons to show damages. Actual frame may be better than pictures of the damage.

ouch... I hope you're in better shape than the frame. I like the wind chime or some kind of lawn or wall art ideas.

Yep, in the process of building up another CAAD9 (the last one my local bike shop had).

I LOVED it. Felt really responsive and fit me better than my previous ride. Luckily, I was able to snatch up the last CAAD9 the shop has, so I'll get a second round with Cdale. :D

shop stool FTW! I've also heard of people making lamps out of them.

I'm hoping that there is a police report and that the driver has insurance... so that the replacement is free at least...

I'd go the wall art route... i've always wanted to hang a frame in my basement along with my other bike stuff... just dont have a crashed one (and hope I never have one)... but if I did... i'd toss it on the wall...

and yes, the caad9s are amazing... just got out for my first ride after a few big upgrades to mine... and wow... great ride...

good luck and hope you weren't too hurt in the crash, looks like there could be some damage

That looks cool, but I bet it's not very stable.

funny, those were my exact same thoughts....cool but unstable.
