The old Cinelli cork tape on my Nitto bars left some very stubborn sticky residue when I peeled it off. I've removed the residue with WD-40. What do you recommend to dissolve it, preferably less toxic than WD-40?

Goo gone. Works wonders, smells like oranges. Wipe it on reasonably thick, let soak for 5-10 min. then rub it off with a rag. Use new sections of rag every few inches of bar, as it will get gummed up with glue residue.

I wipe the bars clean with rubbing alcohol afterwards to have a clean surface for new tape.

Thanks! I'll stop at my local hardware store and pick up a bottle.

If you can wait a bit, I'm sure Rapha will be introducing their own organic adhesive removal that is curated from extracts of vegetation found only in specific areas within the Andean Tumbes-Chocó-Magdalena Hotspot.

I've tried it. Works pretty well but the remaining residue is a pale pink with celery stripes.

Lucho Herrera used to ride the 18% 10-mile climbs here in training for his epic 1987 Vuelta win. To recover, he would inhale the narcotic scent of these exotic plants."

I leave the stuff on - helps keep the new tape on better.

I agree with 54ny77, be sure to remove the Goo Gone residue when you're done. Windex / window cleaner also works for that.

Like Louis I've found the best way to remove old bar tape goo is to install new bar tape right over it :D

Close.

Eucalyptus oil is the best gum remover there is. The best.

paint thinner, or WD40 both work pretty well.

Me too. There are plenty of places on your bike to be OCD where it actually matters. Why drive yourself nuts?

WD40 works well as a mild solvent, but can actually leave a film that new tape won't adhere to. After the WD40 (if you must), use a little rubbing alcohol as 55ny77 suggested after the Goo Gone.

i too have used goo gone with great results...it is citrus based so it isn't as noxious (in theory)
