My son came over and wisely decided he didn't want to give 400$ to United (round trip cost) to have his bike here for one or two rides. But of course he still wants to ride the Ventoux. He's not done that one. Did some searching on the web for bike rentals around Ventoux and surprised myself by finding a number of them. Don't know if it helped that I did the search in french or not since I think most of the sites I found have english versions. Thought this might be some useful information for people who'd like to come over and ride but cringe at the bs pricing with the airlines. So with no further ado, here's what I found:
bike rentals (http://www.ventoux-bikes.fr/index.html)
bike rentals (http://www.francebikerentals.com/)
bike rentals (http://www.luberon-biking.fr/ )
bike rentals (http://www.albioncycles.com/ )
bike rentals (http://www.location-velo-ventoux.com/)

My wife and I used francebikerentals (http://www.francebikerentals.com/Home/tabid/36/Default.aspx) during our honeymoon last year. First-rate service. They delivered the bikes to our cottage, complete with helmets, computers, water bottles, etc.

The only downside was the expense, but like the OP said, it was a lot cheaper than shipping our own bikes.

My wife happens to work with the son of the proprietor, so we felt quite secure in the transaction.

I was in Provence in September and accidentally found myself in Bedoin (town at the foot of the Ventoux). I couldn't resist either, bought a kit, and rented a bike and went up. Bedoin has a mini-industry built up surrounding cyclo-tourism and it was very easy to find a shop that rented bikes. There were several to choose from, and I picked the first one (rented a carbon TIME, something). After buying jersey, shorts, water bottles, socks (rented shoes & helmet), the price wasn't cheap, but I'm sure it cost less than schlepping a bike over (unless it's a Breakaway/S&S).

I don't recall the name of my rental place, but could find out (by looking at my water bottles I bought), if anyone needs to know. They did a good job, but there were several to choose from.

Further Ado? Adieux! (farewell in French)

Thanks, velotel. We have our bikes set up with s&s couplers and bring them , but many friends do not. This will be of great help in organizing an autumn trip. Merci !
