Just wanted to say how much I love riding high volume tires. Picked up a pair of Vittoria Randonneur Cross 700x32 and man are they sweet. Recently picked up a CoMotion Americano from one my best buds. Put the Vittoria's on today and did about 70 in the hills south and east of Nashville. Buttery smooth. It's funny as he and I ordered matching ( not same color) Americano's back in the early 2000's in preparation for a cross country ride that never materialized. I sold mine because I was in the hammerhead roadie frame of mind back then and kept trying to ride it like a road bike. It's not, it's a touring bike. Anyway, long story short I picked up his as he makes room for an incoming Strong. Bottom line the tires made the ride today.

Ditto on the 100k with 650x42. Would have been perfect except for the steady 25 mph wind in my face. But, I got the tail wind on the way back and 650bx42 with a serious push really roll!!! Gusts up to 45mph

700 x 35's @ 60psi for me today.

Some of the dirt roads are a bit squishy yet so bigger is better!

Get some Randonneur Hypers and you'll be even happier.

I was riding some 28c Rubinos this weekend and my riding buddies kept asking me, "are those 32's, they're so fat?". Frankly, I hardly ever ride anything skinnier than 28's anymore (except my 25mm Vittoria tubulars), and can't believe they're enjoying the roads around here on 23s! While they're dodging cracks in the road, I'm just motoring through.

Which tires in a 32ish size do you all receommend? I am looking at the Pasela's as a good value tire, how does it fair?

Thanks,

Paul

You cannot beat the Pasela for value. You can get them for $15 at Nashbar right now - or, at least, you could a few days ago (I haven't checked today). For that money, they're fantastic, nothing comes close.

Vittoria Randonneur Hyper's. Reasonably light for the width, fairly supple, but still plenty tough, I really like them, I know GRAVELBIKE is a fan as well.

My two bits,

One quibble with riding 700 x 32 or 700 x 35. I don't like them with conventional narrower rims like Open Pros. There's just too much unsupported tire. I think you need wider rims like the A23s to use them effectively.

I agree regarding the width of the rims. Fortunately the CoMo sports a pair of Velocity Dyad hoops at 24mm. I do remember riding 32's on Open Pro's on my old Indy Fab and it was definitely a different feel. The wheel set on the CoMo is way overbuilt just like everything else on that bike. DT Hugi hubs are 145's. Same hub they use on a tandem but I must say they spin out nicely.

Thanks Butch. I have to say that the roads around middle TN are made for cycling. Nothing like riding around Tampa.

I can just squeak in Schwalbe Ultremo 28s on my Merckx (with narrowish DT465 rims). Went for my first ride down a badly paved 4 mile winder, they are very, very supple and confidence inspiring. Almost like sew-ups that way, but subjectively they actually feel faster.

Good to hear. I'm about to swith from some 32mm Rondi Pros to 28c Rubino's (on my cross/commuter). How's the puncture resistance been?

100% agree. An A23 or even a nice light 29r rim work wonderfully.

It's hard to see in this picture (http://www.cyclingnews.com/features/photos/nahbs-2012-part-6-alliance-to-wound-up/211701) , but we've got a classic 23 x 15 box section rim (with eyelets) landing in late June. Available in 700c and 650b, 28h and 32h versions.

Cheers,
KP

I think I've had 1 or 2 flats on a couple pairs of Rubino's over the last 3 years. I haven't even really looked at the most recent flatted tube, not sure if that was a puncture or pinch flat, I didn't find anything in the tire when I checked it? Not sure how helpful this is, just my experience.

Dollar for dollar the best tire made, imho.

It's been said before, but bears repeating: the non-Tourguard version without the aramid belt rides much better than the TG's. They are harder to find, and may be available with wire bead only, but I definitely prefer them (and they are cheaper).

I put at least 2500 miles on some 28mm paselas and can count the number of flats I had on one hand. Definitely a great deal.

You want volume? For kicks, I test rode a Surly Moonlander a few weeks ago. Not sure I'd actually buy one, but man, that was fun. The 'monster truck' of bicycles. Small children and animals don't stand a chance if they get in the way.

I have sets of both A23s and Dyads. The A23s work really nicely with both skinny and fat tires. I've had them for just a year and logged plenty of miles on them. My concern over the long haul is whether they're at greater risk of damage with the 23c tires. I try to keep the tires nicely inflated.

is it the silver one in the far back? if so, are you getting these in a ano version as well?
i'm interested to see what you've got coming in since i'd like a box section rim and have heard mixed reviews of the TB14s

Hi Dave,

Do you know if the Rubino 28's run large or do they just appear big? Thanks!

Hi Dave,

Do you know if the Rubino 28's run large or do they just appear big? Thanks!

I've been running them on a set of HED C2 rims, and they seem to be pretty accurately sized. I can check with a caliper tomorrow, but if I had to guess I'd say they're right on 28mm.

I think they may have appeared big to my riding companions who were both on 23's.

Dave

I curious what rim your running, I just picked up some 28 rubinos and got 25.5 with my calipers with both tires. They are mounted on some old school hard ano rims until my new commuter wheels get here but I can't imagine them getting to 27.5. Kinda bummed...

Just checked with a caliper, they're 27.5mm!

How are Ksyriums for the wider tyres, say Vittoria cross 32's ?
Thinking of something for riding the dirt roads in Westchester/Putnam counties and such.
