Campy Ergo 10/Shimano Cassette Options

I know a lot of people do this-- I have been doing a bunch of researching on the various forums. There seems to a bunch a different ways it might be done. But was wondering if there was any consensus as to which way works the best. Or at least which ways work really well. Here are the ways I have heard this could work

A) Campy 10 Ergo/Shimano 9 cassette/Shimano derailleur/Hubbub cable routing

B) Campy 10 Ergo/Shimano 9 cassette/Campy 10S derailleur/regular cable routing

this was recommended to me by oldpotatoe, although it was specifically with regard to triples. I am not sure if that makes much difference.

I have personally only tried A). I just put it on my wife's lemond and it seems to be working ok on the couple of rides we have used it on.

But I have been wanting to try B) and/or C)

Thoughts as to which of these really work well? Which are the top performing? Which not so much?

I'm running Campy Centaur 10 levers 7 derailleurs w/ WI hub & SRAM 10 cassette using JTek. Just set it up a week or so ago but so far so good. Shifts as consistently as a full group thus far.

I assume that you are using Shimano freehubs, which is causing you to over think the situation. Use a conversion cassette, or swap the freehub for a Campy, if available.

Both work, IME.

Forget about using a 10s Campy with a 9s Shimano. Life's too short and cassettes are cheap.

You know me, I always over think things. And then I compensate by making a bad decision and having to do it over again.

But in this case I have a collection of 10S Ergos and 9 speed shimano cassettes and chains. And shimano splined wheels. I will probably eventually do what you recommend, but in the meantime I figured I would try some of these things.

But while I am at it, if anyone has a 10S conversion cassette in something like a 12-27 I would be interested.

I have been through several iteration to get get Campagnolo shifters to work with Shimano wheels on my tandem. First I tried using Campy 10-speed shifters and derailleurs with a remanufactured cassette to get Campy spacing. Never shifted right for me. Next I tried the Campy 10-speed shifters and derailleur with the pulley thing with a regular 9-speed Shimano cassette. Worked great initially, but got out of adjustment very quickly. I could adjust it back to fine shifting, but I had to adjust it every few rides. Too much work for me. About a year back I switched to the daVinci setup referenced above. I have been really pleased with the shifting and I have not had to touch it since, so that would get my vote.

I used option B to be able to use a Shimano 9 spd 11-34 cassette with 10s Ergo levers and a Campy Long cage cassette. Just fits and shifting is pretty good. Put this extreme setup on to ride the Alpes' double digit graded roads. Once you set it up with the limit screws the setup is great.

Option E, the Jtek Shiftmate, has worked perfectly for us on over 10 bikes.

While it needs some tweaks after the first two-three rides -- and truly small tweaks -- after that it remains indexing perfectly.

Since the Shiftmate also allows nearly any combo of brand/company/speed, it would seem to be an excellent solution for most hybrid drivetrains.

I saw a Steve Rex set-up with Campy 10 shifters, campy rear mech and nine shimano cogs. Then I saw Old P mention it works. So I pulled out a Shimano wheel, put nine speed cogs on, used a nine chain.

Voila, works fine.

I did this in the old days with Campy nine downtube shifters and 8 speed shimano cogs.

Fior me this is going to be a way to burn up old shimano cogsets and save the precious campy cogs

What's the specific problem? Over-shifting? Rubbing? Something else?

The large pulley is on the correct side (based on instructions)?

The flat cross-over point is at the one o'clock position (more or less; that's one of the tweaks for me)?

The rear cable between the chainstay and the Shiftmate is shorter than usual?

All those things seem adjusted ok. It just goes out of adjustment easily. Say, every 150 miles or so. Once it's out of adjustment, it is reluctant to shift to a larger sprocket, and tightening the cable adjuster to make it quicker to shift to a larger sprocket results in overshifting.

So basically, I have to start all over again from scratch. Frustrating.

I've never been able to get the Shift-Mate to work consistently. Zero problems with the da Vinci/SRAM rear mech, though.
