Looking for some ideas. Will be my next project. I am considering the Van Dessel Whiskey Tango Foxtrot (lighter on the wallet) among others but I think I want something lighter that I can CX race and rip singletrack on. Love the Ritte Crossberg but out of my range right now and not disc. What are y'all running? Would love to see some pics! TIA. Cheers!

I'm not sure what you mean by monster?

There's a CAAD8 Optimo disc frame that's supposedly superb. I tried to find one for a while and gave up. Lemond Poprad was a steel disc cross frame that also hard to find nowadays too. Salsa makes one too, I forget which model.

Lynskey just sent me blueprints for my Cooper CX Disc. I do not think it will take a monster tire but I am real excited about exploring the dirt roads & trails of the Shenandoah Valley.

Just a cross bike that will run upwards of a 2.1 tire. Not sure I will go that big but some are trending in that direction.

Why not put drop bars on a MTB then?

Drop bar MTBs never felt right to me... I do like the idea of tight geometry and fat tires. I'm currently trying to find a steel disc frame for this purpose.

There are some 29ers with 72 deg HTAs and shorty chainstays. Specialized Stumpjumper comes to mind here. There's only so short you can go on the chainstays before the wheel begins to intrude on the seat tube.

never felt right to me either. I too am looking for a steel disc option. The Van Dessel Whiskey Tango Foxtrot seems to fit the bill but not crazy about the weight or...the colorway option.

salsa fargo
singular gryphon.

if you want drop bars, it should be made for drop bars.

these bikes have a lot of hype. try one first. personally, they are not good at CX racing or singletrack. but usable on both. if you do both frequently and can only get one bike, go for it. if you do one and the other only occasionally, just get the right bike and tweak it for the occasional use.

monsterX are all the rage. rockstars take them on singletrack then win CX races so everyone wants one. wants to be a rockstar.

i ride mostly singletrack. tried a monster cross bike on singletrack. interesting, but missed the proper bike.

definition of singletrack varies widely across the world. for some it's a ribbon of buff dirt. for others it's rocks and roots and twisty trialsy stuff.

Nobody said anything about wanting to be a rock star man. I just want to have fun and try something different.. That is all.

I recall that Origin8 had one called the cx700 that could take a 2.1" 29'er tire.

I was tempted by the Salsa Fargo and Singular Gryphon, in fact bid on each on the'bay but didn't win.
Instead I ordered a custom frame with geometry similar to a Fargo, just a little more stretched out. It finally arrived, got built up last weekend (thanks to some forumites for help with parts), and has been on one ride. Lots of fun, but I'll need to tweak the position a little still. Rigid steel fork, 29x2.0 tires, Salsa woodchipper bar, Centaur 10sp ergos, BB7 brakes. Once I get the position settled, ride some more, and try swapping out a few bits I'll post pictures and more thoughts on whether its permanently replacing my 'cross bike. It will not replace my Salsa Dos Niner for singletrack rides that need more suspension.

I had a Salsa La Cruz a few years ago that I loved but sold it for a lighter Yeti Arc-X. I immediately regretted it and sold the Yeti within the first 3 months of ownership. Since then I've been thinking about getting a Monster CX disc bike but was unsure which direction to go. I ALMOST picked up with Salsa Vaya but ended up with a Fargo since it seemed to be more versatile and the weight penalty was negligible. I had to make a few changes to the Fargo to get it to where I wanted but now I'm beyond satisfied. I've single tracked, toured and road ridden this bike and have zero complaints.

I'd just take a hard look at the Fargo, it's a pretty versatile, comfortable and fun machine.

Working on some better pics but here's my Hunter disc cross in commuter mode. Will fit 2" 29er tires. I love it!

Good stuff gents. I have some ideas. I have contacted Sam at Singular for more info. I will look into the Hunter too. Both are new to me. Grazie!

I think I need a Hunter. He makes some really cool well thought out bikes. I had a line on one a few years ago and passed. Should have bought it.

Voodoo Nakisi here. drop bar 29er/monstercross. Disc or canti. room for 2.3s. Designed by Joe Murray, supposedly based on Cunningham's bikes for Jaqui Phelan.

The frame isn't light, but it's cheap. $350 for frame and fork is an easy way into monster cross bikes.

It handles great- somewhere between a CX bike and an MTB- handles slow technical stuff and climbing as well as any rigid bike, which is to say, you have to pick your lines carefully.

One of the things I love about it is the near-horizontal top tube- it's got a really classic MTB look.

^^...Very nice set-up man. The Peregrine is on my short-list. Sam's Singular site is back up and running again and I gravitated to the Peregrine. I think I saw a pic of yours either there or somewhere else. The stick (at least that's what it looks like) holding the bike up at the bb caught my attention. How do you like it? How does it respond? Do you take it out on much singletrack? Thanks and well done.

Here's how I built up my Gunnar Hyper-X. The Fastlane might be a little more appropriate for all around riding, but I liked the Hyper-X geo.

Yep. I have that (http://www.origin-8.com/?page_id=91&short_code=Origin-8+CX700+Steel+Cross&cl1=FRAMES+%26+ACCESSORIES) frame and the tire clearance is just enormous. It's not the lightest frame around, but it's incredibly versatile. It can do disc or canti/v-brakes and has removable/swappable mounts for all of those things. On top of that, it's pretty damn cheap. I think mine was around $250 from the LBS.

The only negative I can think of is that you might need to be careful when running anything other than a mountain triple crank. The chainstays are so wide that you can't put anything very narrow on there.

I am about to swap mine out for a Surly Crosscheck, so if you're short and interested in that frame, shoot me a PM.

Rawland runnin´700cX45mm, I sometimes run 650bX2.3 but if I am gonna use that much of a tire I just use my YBB.

Like the look of that Rawland, too, with its towering head tube -- what model is it? Couldn't tell based on a quick look at their website...
