Hey guys,
Just outfitted a new bike with 8s Campy and was wondering what my options are if I want to go to 10s in the future. Could I rebuild my levers with 10s parts and use my old RD or do I need a new RD/ergos? I've got Chorus ergos and an 8s Record Ti RD.

Not sure about 10 but I have a set of 8 speed brifters that are now 9. To go to 10 I am fairly sure you would also need to address the RD pulleys and change them to 10 speed pulleys too.

Can convert 8s lever to 9s but not 10s. shift disc inner flats and the resulting thru bolt changed with new shape, 9s then 10s ERGO body. New shape is thinner thru the thru bolt so no real way to convert to 10s.

Thanks gents. Looks like she's 8s for life since one cog isn't worth that much to me. I'd have to mess with the freehub too. Maybe my next bike will be 10 or 11s.

Not to contradict Peter...but...people have converted 8s to 10s using the entire guts of a 10s Ergo.

You need to relieve the inside back of the ergo body if I remember correctly.

Thirdgenbird over on BF.com has done it I know.

this is strictly my opinion, but the index feel of the 8 speed Ergolevers is better than any 10 speed Campy I have used (I haven't ridden any 11spd yet). I do like the shape of the 10 speed shifters a bit better, but I would prefer the index feel of 8 speed. Also, I have found that the more gears you add in the back the more tuning you need to do to keep it shifting 100% correct.

All this is to say... I don't think the grass is all that greener on the 10 speed side.

Not sure about the conversion, but I love the second shot of the front of the bike it just looks right. As if it's just ready to go out and ride no matter how many gears it has. How about a full shot after the build?
Is it a Bottechia (spelling?)

Having used Ultegra 6600 and Sram Force before this, I'd have to agree.

Thanks, I should get out my camera since it was done yesterday. Yes it is a Bottecchia. 1989 SL.

I edited my original post to take out the (better than 9 or 10 speed) because I just remembered that I did have some 1st generation 9 speed Chorus shifters that were also of the same feel and I didn't want to overgeneralize.

The benefit they would have is to be able to use more modern wheelsets without doing a reverse hub conversion and still have that more positive index feel. I think that 90%+ of the 9 speed shifters still around are of the newer generation that are more like the 10 speed ergos.

I miss those 1st gen Chorus 9 speed shifters... I should have never sold them.

Also, just so you know... although 8 speed cassettes will often fit on 9/10 speed wheels, if you have aluminum hub bodies the splines will get chewed up really quickly because they are not designed to bear the load of an 8 speed cassette correctly.

Both bikes I currently ride are Campy 10's. But.....I think going from 8 to 9 is a bigger improvement in cog choice than going from 9 to 10. I like riding a 13-26 for most riding (but not all), and like 9's 13-26 a lot better than 8's 13-26.

You can get good money for those 8speed parts. If you arent into rebuilding bikes with the era stuff that bike would look sick with campagnolo athena 11 silver.

i didn't do it myself, but my local campy guru rebuilt my chorus 8s shifter to 10 speed, and it worked gorgeously for as many seasons as i had it. beautiful stuff, that old 8s, and the rebuild ability was why i started going with campy in the first place. nice build!

If you want to do that just get a centaur 10 speed body like for 150 or maybe less and move the brake lever over. Done.

I'd be happy to swap '09 Centaur index ring and ratchet gear with you if you aren't joking...

In spite of the fact that you can't really convert an 8s ERGO to 10s, NO need to swap pulleys. The '8s' ones work fine with a 10s chain.

That's correct, you have to make the inside of the ERGO body much thinner. That job so difficult...and expensive(ask the Campag giys when they made pinty top levers for Jan) that it is 'essentially' a non starter..it is for me anyway.

You can 'rebuild STI also, but I say no to that also.

Chorus 11 levers to 10 speed?

Yep, that's 'pretty' easy..just use the 10s shift disc from a 10s lever, 2009/10 Centaur or Veloce.

It looks like it came out great a bike ment to be ridden and ridden fast. The only thing i would change is put a black seat on it or have the one recovered in black someone on this forum recovers seats here.
You can post more pictures in the gallery section for all to see more readily.
Have a great ride.
