View Full Version : Friday Afternoon time waster - which stem?

A Friday afternoon time waster: I can't decide between a -6 degree stem with 30mm of spacers, or a zero-degree stem with 20mm of spacers. The result is the same handlebar height. If I go with #2, then I'll trim the top of the steerer.

Want to help me decide? (Sorry about the camera angle is different.)

i like the look of the ritchey stem better, however, if you could get your hands on a Ti. moots stem, it would really be the icing on the cake for that beauty.

if you're soliciting other feedback, i would say a black stem would look better than white too...

Either one really looks ok to me. But agree that black or ti would look nicer than white. Also note that there is a hair of a difference in effective horizontal length/reach with the different angles - the 90* stem is 3mm shorter than the 84* stem. (With an estimated stem length of 120mm from your pics.)

Fizik seatpost - nice. Like it? Carbon or alloy?

sweet ride.

black stem for sure.

option #2.

then have a shop (or you) trim the top for 1cm spacer.

I tend to prefer a stem angle that echoes the top tub angle. In this case that would be stem number 1.

The stems are 110, and I offset the difference in reach with a slight longer reach handlebar.

I have both carbon and alloy Fiziks and really like them. Easy to set the angle and nice understated graphics. The little leather-like collar is a nice touch too - marks your seat height and helps keep out the elements.

Thanks for the suggestions/help!

This is not a time-waster by the way. It's very significant question worthy of the democratic process.

I was trying for a different look with the white stem. :bike: Oh well, black it will be.

Agreed. That said, I use a 0deg Thomson on my level TT Vagen. But I agree with the above - more elegant.

Like Fixed said the fewer spacers below stem the more to my liking. Provided there are enough spacers remaining for future adjustments and to keep from hurting bike's resale value.

May even try installing the -6 turned up +6 just to see how it looks with fewer spacers still. You did say you wanted to waste time, right? ;)
