View Full Version : what bike do YOU REGRET selling?

when I was in college I had no money and desperately wanted a vintage road bike. One day I come across an ad for a "tierra" on craigslist. The pictures were small, the description was short and the guy was asking $300. Not even knowing what he had I set him an email about his bike, explaining that I was a college student and didn't have alot of cash but could offer $250. He countered with $200 (!!!!) making it conditional that I restore the bike and ride it. Apparently he used to race on the bike while he was a student at UCSB and the builder, Chris Pauley, did him a favor and built this frame after he crashed his bob jackson. So he was "paying it forward" to a degree.

I restored the bike and road it almost everyday for 2 years. I held onto it for another 4 after that but after accumulating too many bikes and feeling pressure from my girlfriend about the space issue I finally sold the bike. I regret it to this day.

It's been a few years since I sold it and I still think about that bike sometimes. It had such a special story behind it (and the builder who made it) and it kills me I sold it. What have you sold that you regret? Come, make me feel better.

I regret selling my father's 1954 Raleigh Sport. He wanted it out of his garage and gave it to me. To me it was just a bike that was far too large for me and of a style that I hate, but it was his and he'd gotten it for his Bar Mitzvah. I got very little money for it and would honestly prefer having it in my basement as a hand me down.

1992 Cannondale Track with Suntour. It was a hair too small for me and I doubt I'll ever find another polished one.

A Klein Quantum Z, blue and black splash paintjob, a frame I got for nothing and built up as a single speed, I rode it to work sparingly over two years, and then decided to sell the frameset to make room in my basement-too many bikes. I didnīt like the ride of the original aluminum fork, but other than that was a nice, stiff and well built little gem, the paint quality was incredible, it could pass for new even though it was 20 years old and I locked it up outside a few times. It came complete with cool Sheldon Brown sticker, the guy I got it from lived near Harris Cyclery in Newton, MA, so I guess he bought it there.

My 1980 Bianchi Specialissima frameset -- Columbus SL tubing with Campy dropouts; built up with vintage Campy Super Record. It was a shade too big and I needed the capital to finance the purchase of a Serotta Concours from a forumite. :)

Any bike I have ever sold was one I felt half-hearted about, so no regret in seeing it go. But I also sell very few bikes, they just sort of pile up. Some complete bikes are hidden away in closets, some are frame upon frame aligned in rows on hooks from the ceiling. This has got to stop.

I have had one that was stolen, a Dave Moulton, and that was an incident beyond my control and the bike I regret losing.

The PDM Concorde tops the list. SLX steel. My first 'real' road bike.

Another is a TIGed SL Battaglin. Not the fanciest, but I loved riding that bike (as long as there wasn't a sprint!)

Ya, except now she's my fiance. I don't blame her for suggesting I sell a few bikes. At the time I think we had 7-8 in our apartment living room. Apparently she thought the Tierra was the last bike I would sell and was saddened that I sold it. Afterwards she said, "if I would have known you were going to sell the Tierra, I wouldn't have said anything".

No regrets from selling any of my bikes/frames of the past. I was particularly glad to get rid of one, the brand of which I won't mention (no, not a Serotta). It was a lugged steel abortion. Took a slight bath, money-wise, but I was so glad to get rid of it for ANY price it didn't matter. :hello: .

UC Santa Cruz Slug actually, although I was almost a Gaucho. I was sold on Santa Cruz the minute I visited the campus and saw the proximity to trailhead. Making decisions on my academic future with only cycling in mind (?) -- maybe not the wisest choice but I don't regret a minute of it.

I sold my Fina Estampa toward the end of last year (looking at the red bikes thread, it looks like Snah has it now) to fund a steel Peg. However, I may have liked the Fina just a tad bit more. The new Peg feels great and rides wonderfully but the Fina just had a little extra zip when you would crank on the pedals and a bit more immediacy to it. Plus the aesthetic of the fat round tubes really did it for me. I may have to find another one... :)

I would literally need a 20by30ft. garage for all the bikes I had and possibly a aircraft hanger to really display them and have guest. This mostly includes motorbikes I had owned.

I miss my 2005 zx10r and my 2003 KTM 625SXC. Awesome bikes I owned outright and in beautiful shape but I was in between jobs and bored and had fear. I guess I felt that they symbolized some perverted worship of oil and I felt righteous enough to part with them. I lost a lot of money selling those bikes and looking back I don't think I'll ever replace them but if I just kept one it would be nice to have to take a spin around the area once in a while. I traded the Ninja for it's book value for a Honda Ruckus scooter which is a hoot and a newly custom built Cervelo frame five years ago. Since then I have used the scooter a lot the carbon featherweight bike not so much because I am more of a "Fred" or tourer than I am a racer but I thought I was worth it at the time. Oh well  It's just stuff.

Just one.

I, or I should say my family sold my Merlin when I was in the wreck that broke my back. The Dr's told them and I that I might not ever walk again.

It took a LONG time, and many hours of work, but I can not only walk, but ride again!

Sack up Mr. Chips. The really steep decline is yet to come.

I took a programming course my senior year of high school. We "wrote" code on cards. Big stacks of cards. Like in the Bible. No lie.

People put ads in newspapers. Which were actually paper. Big flat white-ish sheets. Made from trees. Which brings us back, full circle, to the actual thread. Because it was in such newspapers that I advertised and sold my Rossin (at a dark lean time in grad school) and later my Masi (1980s Masi, but still . . . ) But it's all ok.

All of them...

Seriously, I regret selling my Bridgestone MB-6. It was at the bottom of the line, but it was a wonderful workhorse. A great, solid, heavy, fantastic bike.

I will always regret I did not have a custom Hors Categorie built around fat tires. What I have now is awesome, but I wish I could put 32's on her... or at least 28's.

I regret selling my second Hors. If I could have afforded it, I would have had it chopped as well.

Most of the others over the years come and go - and I will have the memories, but not miss the bikes.
