so i don't own an iphone but my daughter does and uses it extensively in business. today her phone went dead. she was at a client and asked the question about her problem. someone suggested a hard reboot. this solved the problem and the phone is now functioning properly again. snyway this is what i found on wikipedia:

http://www.wikihow.com/Hard-Reset-an-iPhone

hope it helps anyone else that has this problem!!

It's easy to forget that the phone isn't really "off" just because the screen isn't on.
My iPhone camera does some weird stuff every once and a while,
so i'll power it off and restart, and then it's fine.

if you're running too many apps in the background occasionally it'll run out of memory and turn 'off.'
