A ubiquitous, boring, oft-discussed topic, surely....but since I'm about to run out, I'm ordering some new bike grease for all the usual bike use things. Been using Phil Wood for I don't know how long, since the early Reagan administration I suppose.

Is there anything else compelling or as good these days in the market? Or is that stanky Phil Wood green goop as good as anything, i.e., stick with what I know?

Phil makes the best all-purpose grease, if you are mostly concerned about the color & smell, then use Crisco or Extra-virgin olive oil ;)

Like noses, everyone has an opinion. I've used Kendall Super Blu for years.

Yeah went with stinky green. Too many other products out there, so confusing, so frightening. After all, I'm just a caveman....

I have been happy with the Phils; I also use Pedros on occasion as it fits in my mini greasee gun.

been using Mobil-1 for years. as good as Phil, but easier to find, and cheaper. i've been using the same tub for years now, and i use it for car related stuff more than bike stuff.

This is the first time I have seen Mobil 1 grease; may have to give that a try on my next grease purchase.

literally any auto parts store should carry it.

Another alternative is Bel-Ray motorcycle grease. About the same body as Phil's, but it is light blue and non-smelly. The color lets you see how much dirt/gunk is being carried in it. Look for it at your local hoodlum store.

+1 on Phil Wood, I'll try Mobil and post my impressions.

Angry, that's a good call on the Mobil 1. I'll have to try that sometime. That tub would last me about 30 years for bike-only. :D

SteveSLO: speaking of Bel-Ray stuff, I bought my first sportbike in your neck of woods, on S. Higuera across the st. from the DMV at a moto shop. I just looked at Google street view and it's no longer there (corner of Margarita).

Probably not as inexpensive as automotive-sized stuff, but I've had good results with Finish Line (http://www.finishlineusa.com/products/fortified-grease.htm) products.

Phil is good stuff, as is Pedro's syn.

I like the idea of a *lightly* colored grease to more easily discern its condition.

About 10 yrs ago I got a giant tube of pro-gold's purple EPX. Its technically fine grease but too stiff and tacky for hubs but ok for BBs and freehubs and headsets and pedals
Its also kinda dark to help with visual inspection.

Lately I've been using a big tube of cheap white lithium grease from Lowes...same theading to fit the Pedro's grease gun. Works nice with campy grease ports to freshen up bearings regularly. When you do that, any grease is fine.

To those using Mobil 1 synthetic -- any problems with separating or bleeding? I only ask because I saw some posts on automotive forums where people either love it or hate it. Those who hated it had the separating or bleeding. I realize we're talking different applications, just wondering.

Grease is 'oil in soap'. I use a combo of blue boat grease mixed with white lithium, both I get from my local hardware store, $5 for big tub. Petroleum based are best, IMO(for the oil part).

I'm not a fan of Phil cuz it stinks, and it's pretty dark. Sometimes a light colored grease, you can tell when it's dirty.
