In the market for a wheel set in the 1-1.2K range.
Replacing Velomax Ascent IIs which I love.
I do like the AL braking rim so I can change wheels without changing pads.
Any thoughts or alternate suggestions?

Thanks for reading!
John

I have been using the Dura Ace 7850 SL wheels for about a year and I love them (not exactly the C24s, but close). They seem to do everything well. They are still true, roll up quickly, and feel stiff but not at all harsh. My other wheels are Ksyrium Elites. The performance of the Dura Ace wheels is head and shoulders above the Elites in my opinion. Hope that helps.

Tubeless or regular?

Tubeless......but I run tubes in them with Vittoria Open Corsa CX tires.
The non-tubeless variety is a bit lighter weight.

I have been using Hutchinson Fusion 3 tubless tires. I have really liked them, but puntcured my front tire on Sunday and need to replace the rear because of wear. The high cost might have me switching back to standard tires to see if I notice a significant difference.

can you not get more spokes, better ride quality, lighter, wider rimmed wheels for less than $5-600? how about some Velocity a23 rims, some lightweight hubs, and Sapim Laser spokes? 1500 grams and seemingly bulletproof. just a thought.

You mentioned changing brake pads between carbon and alu wheels. I just leave my King Yellow pads on all the time and run light grit sand paper over them a few times before putting on the carbon wheels. The pads last a whole season.

True, what hub set are you thinking of?

I also have two sets of the C24 clinchers. Great wheels. Have about 16K on one set and 5K on the other. You can get other wheels, deep dish, fancy, lighter, etc., but I think it will be a struggle to find better wheels anywhere near their cost. Just a good all around robust wheel set.

I just got my 7850 tubulars out yesterday, so very limited data to review from (with wind at 15+ mph sustained, gusts past 30mph). They replaced a pair of Easton EA90SLs (which had Conti 4000s's). The 7850s have Conti Sprinters.

they do seem to spin up a bit more quickly than the Eastons
despite the nasty winds and cross winds, on what hills we have here, I found I was staying in the seat more, rather than needing to get out of the saddle
braking is definitely not as good
rear hub is stealthy quiet

I got them for a lot less than MSRP, so I'm quite happy so far. I expect they'll do well in the mountains.

and i know they get mixed reviews. mine are working fine at this time. how about white industries, velocity race, or dt?

in fact, how about simply buying off the rack velocity wheels:

White Industry hubs + 28F/32R Open Pro + alum nips + 14/15 spokes =1550g or so. Use Stans 340's, DT Swiss 415's or the A23 and you'll have a light easy to service long lasting wheelset. For less.

You should consider Dura Ace hubs.

Everyone I know with the Dura Ace pre-built wheels, loves them.

If I was buying a wheel set with A23s, I'd just get the Velocity A23 wheel set. I have a set of Nuvians that spin like crazy and are plenty light.

I have the C24 7900 TL version w/ hutchinson fusion 3 tubeless. I've never owned "nice" wheels before, so these are waaay better than anything I've experienced. I've hit some nasty gaps/potholes at high speed and even taken them off road a bit without them needing truing (yet).
