I'm sure it's here someplace but has anybody had any experience with repairing a carbon frame? I have a cracked seat stay. I was thinking Calfee....

This is in Overland Park, correct? I may actually try this place out, as I have a repair. Normally from the shop we send stuff to Calfee, but it would be nice to find a local place that's reliable. I've heard good things about this shop, if we're speaking of the same place. Motorcycle shop that does carbon repair?

O.k. I contacted this guy, he's in Olathe. Sounds pretty competent, and since this is my personal bike, I'm going to give it a shot and see what he can do. I'll post the results once I get the bike back.

Not sure where you are located. I am in Orlando and we have a guy known as the Frame Doctor. I have seen some of his work. Can't even tell he worked on it. Check out some of his work on his site and read some of the testimonials. Joey has not done anything for me (knock on wood) but he has fixed some of my mates rides. Check it out.

I'll second Joey the Frame Doctor in Orlando. Several repairs by him have come through our shop and the work was nothing short of fantastic.

Velonews did a good article on carbon frame repair with several shops reviewed:

I had a smashed head tube on my cervelo repaired by edwin at http://www.rrvelo.com/repairs.html . He used to the head honcho for carbon repairs at calfee. I found his pricing and turn around better then calfee.

I race with Brady, nice guy. I know several people who have had stuff fixed by him and they said it was good work.

I had Calfee repair a carbon seat stay and my only criticism is that it wasn't cosmetically perfect. Functionally, it's been great and, given that the repair was on naked carbon, I don't really have a complaint.

I don't know if they've changed their policy but at the time, you couldn't deal with them directly - they would only work through a bike shop. I'm pretty sure that my LBS didn't mark it up but YMMV (I'm a pretty good customer and they're good people.)

Highly recommended.

I have heard that you have to go through a bike shop to deal w Calfee. Not an issue though

Cosmetically I'm not concerned either because it's on the inside of the seat stay

Thanks for all the help. I have read the Bicycling article too. I'm gonna look into some of these other options

Call Joe's Bicycle Painting in Santa Cruz. He is in the same location as Calfee (just in the back) and if I am not mistaken, does some repairs for Calfee.

Good luck!

I think he is a painter. Calfee does their own repairs.

You can also check with Hottubes up in Mass. They do some carbon repair also.

A friend in the bike club was in a crash that cracked his carbon down tube. Calfee did the repair. It was repainted, not sure if Calfee of a local bike shop arranged that. The repair was detectable only because there was a small raised area the size of a pin head in the repainted area. IIRC the repair was around $600, vs something like two thousand for a new frame.

I took my Tarmac with a crack in the seat stay near the dropout to this shop on Thursday, and I picked it up today (Saturday). Fantastic job, you would never know it had been repaired, matched the paint perfectly. He said it was structurally better after the repair than before.

We'll see when I'm lying in a ditch. ;)
