I am installing a headset for the first time. I hope pictures will help explain my question.

I am wondering which direction the bearings should face for the top part of the headset and the bottom part of the headset.

I've tried to look this up, but found people gave different answers. It didn't help that terms like cup, rare, retainer confused me.

Thank you.

Use this Wikipedia link (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Headset_(bicycle_part)) to view an exploded diagram of a Ritchey Headset. This should help.

Problem is, the top bearing could fit either way, depending on whether the upper pressed race is shaped like a cup, as in the Ritchey picture, or a cone, in which case the bearing would be inverted.

To confirm you've got it right, install both pressed races and fork crown race.

Do NOT use grease on the bearings or races at this time.

With the bike upside down, plop a bearing retainer on the lower race and slip the fork on. Try it with the bearing in both orientations. One position should feel obviously smoother than the other.

Remove the fork and upright the bike. Place a bearing retainer on the top race then place the adjustable cup on it. No fork; just the cup. Spin it with your fingers and try both orientations. One way should be noticeable smoother than the other. That's the one you want.

Now you can add grease and assemble as you normally would.

is most bearings i have installed have a totally flat surface on one side and an obviously angled surface on the other side. for the top part of the headset (cup), the angled side faces down. for bottom half of the headset the angled side faces up.
